A water test kit measures only the specific contaminants or properties its label and method cover. A negative result does not show that water is free of hazards the kit did not test for. Use a home kit as a limited preliminary check; when a health decision depends on the result, a contaminant is suspected, or a reading is unclear, contact a state-certified drinking-water laboratory.

What water quality test kits detect

There is no single, universal capability shared by all water test kits. Depending on the exact product and method, a kit or meter may measure selected properties such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS) or conductivity, hardness, nitrate, chlorine, iron, or other listed analytes. Check the product’s analyte list, detection range or limit, method, sample requirements, and interpretation instructions before using it.

EPA lists a much broader set of parameters that may matter depending on the water source and local risks, including coliform bacteria, nitrate, TDS, pH, lead, copper, radon, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), other metals, chloride, sulfate, iron, manganese, and hardness. This is a menu of possible concerns—not a claim that one consumer kit covers all of them. A broad label such as “multi-parameter” does not establish which hazards are included or how reliably they are measured. EPA’s guidance on protecting home water explains how to match testing to conditions.

What a reading can—and cannot—tell you

A result applies to the parameter measured by that test, under its stated conditions. TDS, pH, appearance, taste, or odor alone cannot identify every contaminant or establish that water is safe to drink. A kit that tests for several parameters still cannot answer questions about untested hazards.

What water test kits can miss

The main limitation is scope: a kit cannot report contaminants it is not designed to detect. Methods and detection limits also matter. A test may not detect a contaminant at a concentration relevant to a health decision, and the sample type may affect the result.

Why lead testing needs particular care

A 2021 study by Kriss, Pieper, Parks, and Edwards evaluated 16 brands across four types of at-home lead kits. The authors found that 12 of the 16 brands were not suitable for drinking-water analysis, reporting lead detection limits of 5–20 mg/L. They also found that binary test strips detected dissolved lead at drinking-water-relevant levels but failed to detect particulate lead. Those findings concern the products and methods tested; they do not establish that every lead kit currently sold performs the same way. They do show why a result’s method, detection limit, and ability to address dissolved versus particulate lead matter. Read the study record at EPA HERO. If lead results will guide a health decision, use a laboratory test appropriate to the concern.

When to test a private well

EPA recommends that private-well owners test annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, TDS, and pH. Arrange prompt advice and testing if there is a known local groundwater or drinking-water problem, major flooding, nearby land disturbance, construction or industrial activity, a well-component repair or replacement, or a noticeable change in water’s odor, color, or taste. Ask the local health department which additional contaminants are relevant where you live. EPA’s current well guidance provides examples for connecting local clues to tests.

Private-well owners are responsible for arranging their own testing; private domestic wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA estimates that more than 23 million U.S. households rely on private wells, and its current page says around 15 percent of the U.S. population—over 43 million people—use them as a drinking-water source. These are distinct estimates of households and people, respectively; the page does not specify the underlying data year. EPA also summarizes a U.S. Geological Survey study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five had one or more contaminants above a human-health benchmark. That figure is attributed to the USGS study as summarized by EPA, not a claim about every well or contaminant. See EPA’s private-well overview.

Match extra testing to the clue

Situation or clue Tests to discuss
Recurrent gastrointestinal illness Coliform bacteria
Lead-bearing household plumbing or service line pH, lead, and copper
Intensive agriculture nearby Nitrate, nitrite, pesticides, and coliform bacteria
Mining nearby Metals, pH, and corrosion
Gas drilling nearby Chloride, sodium, barium, and strontium
Landfill, factory, gas station, dry cleaner, or fuel odor VOCs and locally appropriate additional tests, such as TDS, pH, sulfate, chloride, and metals
Salty taste or heavily salted road nearby Chloride, TDS, and sodium
Hard-water scale or poor soap lather Hardness
Staining Iron, copper, and manganese

These are EPA’s suggested analytes for the listed clues, not a substitute for local advice. Conditions and state guidance may change which tests are appropriate.

When to use a certified laboratory

Use a state-certified drinking-water laboratory when the result will inform a health-related decision, the suspected contaminant is not covered by your kit, local conditions call for targeted testing, or a home result is positive, ambiguous, or inconsistent with a meaningful concern. Check that the laboratory is certified for the particular analyte and method you need; certification is not a blanket assurance that every lab tests every contaminant.

EPA says laboratories analyzing drinking-water compliance samples must be certified by EPA or a state, use approved methods, successfully analyze proficiency-testing samples at least annually for each method and analyte for which they seek certification, and pass periodic on-site audits. For independent residential testing, EPA directs consumers to state-certified drinking-water laboratories and provides state program contacts. Start with EPA’s state certification contacts and EPA’s laboratory certification guidance.

How to collect a useful sample

Use the container and collection procedure specified by the laboratory or test method you selected. Do not assume that one test’s directions apply to another. For example, coliform testing requires sterile containers and sterile collection conditions; some procedures also specify running the tap before collecting. Ask the laboratory whether it offers sample collection or on-site analysis if you are unsure how to collect or preserve a sample. EPA’s Home Water Testing Facts describes household sampling considerations; the laboratory’s directions for your specific test should govern.

What to do if a result is concerning

  1. Identify the water source. If you use a public water system, review the utility’s Consumer Confidence Report and contact the utility or health department about the concern. The report describes utility monitoring; it does not necessarily answer a question about a particular household tap or plumbing fixture. If you use a private well, arrange testing for the relevant concern.
  2. Define the question. Note whether you are checking routine well conditions, plumbing, a nearby land-use risk, a recent flood or repair, or a new sensory change.
  3. Choose a test that addresses it. Ask the local health department or state environmental agency which contaminants to include. Confirm the exact analyte and method rather than relying on a broad panel name.
  4. Follow collection instructions. Use the laboratory’s or method’s specified container, handling, and preservation directions.
  5. Confirm results that matter. If a result exceeds a health standard, EPA advises contacting the public health department and retesting to confirm the contaminant and concentration. Do not select treatment solely from a generic strip reading.

EPA’s home-testing fact sheet distinguishes utility reports from testing a household sample and offers context for residential testing.
