You can watch Netflix while traveling by signing in as usual on a supported phone, tablet, or computer, but the catalog may change to match the country you are in. Trying to make Netflix show its Japan catalog from abroad is different: Netflix warns that a VPN can prevent it from confirming your location, and it may then show only titles available worldwide. No VPN is guaranteed to unlock Netflix Japan.
Choose the route that matches what you want to watch

Watch Netflix normally while traveling
For a trip, open the Netflix app or Netflix.com and sign in with your account on a supported device. Netflix supports common connected devices, including smart TVs, phones, tablets, streaming players, and game consoles; its Japan page also describes downloading titles on iOS and Android for offline viewing. Device and feature availability can vary.
Do not assume that a title available at home will remain available abroad. Netflix says catalogs differ by country, and that audio, subtitles, ratings, and downloads can also vary by location. Check the title and language options after you arrive; if you need offline viewing, download eligible titles before traveling and confirm they remain available on your device.

What changes when you try to get the Japan catalog
Watching from Japan is not the same as using Netflix abroad. Netflix says its catalog differs by country. Its account-country guidance explains that if it cannot determine your actual location because you are using a VPN, it may show only programs and films available worldwide. That means a Japanese VPN endpoint does not establish that you will see the full Japanese catalog.
Netflix has also described its geographic licensing approach in a corporate statement dated January 14, 2016. David Fullagar, then Netflix vice president of content delivery architecture, wrote: “For now, given the historic practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory.” The statement is historical context, not a guarantee of how a particular VPN connection behaves today.

Netflix says this message means the device or network appears to connect through a VPN or proxy. Its recommended troubleshooting step is to turn off that service. If you are unsure whether a VPN is active, Netflix points users to Fast.com to check the connection country.

- Turn off the VPN or proxy on the device or network you are using.
- Close and reopen Netflix, then try the title again.
- If you do not know whether the connection is being routed through a VPN, use Fast.com as Netflix recommends, and check the reported country.
- If the error continues, follow the steps in Netflix’s VPN/proxy help article or contact Netflix support.
Netflix’s help page says VPNs cannot be used on its ad-supported plan or while watching live events. For those cases, turning off the VPN is the appropriate route; do not assume changing servers or devices overrides the restriction.
Use an account within Netflix’s household rules
Netflix says an account is intended for one household. Household members can watch at home, away from home, or while traveling; that statement is not permission to share an account with people outside the household. See Netflix’s account-sharing announcement for its explanation.

Japan plan prices and supported devices
Netflix Japan’s page listed monthly plans from ¥890 to ¥2,290, before tax, when accessed October 7, 2026. These are Japan-specific, time-sensitive prices—not a quote for a subscriber elsewhere. Confirm the current price and plan details on Netflix Japan’s official page before signing up or changing plans.
Netflix Japan says members can sign in at Netflix.com or use the app on supported smart TVs, phones, tablets, streaming players, and game consoles. iOS and Android users can download eligible titles for offline viewing. The availability of a device feature or download does not guarantee that a particular title will be available in every country.

What to keep in mind
- For ordinary travel, use Netflix normally and expect the local catalog and some playback options to vary.
- For the Japan catalog, a VPN is uncertain: Netflix may limit titles or block the connection, and no provider is verified here as a dependable option.
- If Netflix reports a VPN/proxy connection, turn the service off; the ad-supported plan and live events have additional VPN restrictions.
- Use the account in line with Netflix’s one-household policy.
