You can watch Netflix on a TV without Wi-Fi only if you have another way to get internet or play a title downloaded on a mobile device. The TV’s Netflix app streams over the internet; for offline viewing, download an eligible title to a supported phone or tablet while connected, then connect that device to the TV with a compatible video adapter and cable.
First, tell whether you’re without Wi-Fi or without internet
Wi-Fi is just one way to connect. If your TV or streaming device has internet through Ethernet or another supported connection, use its Netflix app as usual. Netflix’s supported-device and TV guidance describes viewing on an internet-connected device: Netflix Supported Devices and How to watch Netflix on your TV. For Ethernet setup, follow the TV or streaming-device maker’s instructions.
If there is no internet connection at the TV, its Netflix app cannot stream. Netflix describes its service as letting members watch shows and movies on an internet-connected device (What is Netflix?). In that situation, choose between bringing internet to the TV with cellular service or using a mobile device with a title downloaded in advance.

Watch a downloaded Netflix title through your phone or tablet
Netflix downloads are for certain supported phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, depending on plan and device—not for offline playback in the TV app. Netflix’s help page names Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, and Google Chromebook, but that list does not guarantee support for every model or plan (What is Netflix?).

- While you have internet, confirm the title can be downloaded. Open its Netflix title page and look for the Download icon. If it is absent, Netflix says that title cannot be downloaded (Can’t download a TV show or movie).
- Download the title to the mobile device. Wait for the download to finish, and sign in to Netflix before going offline. Keep the app and title on that same device for playback.
- Check video output and the connector. Identify the phone or tablet’s exact model and port, then confirm that it supports wired video output and that the adapter supports video playback.
- Connect the device to the TV. Plug the compatible adapter into the phone or tablet, connect an HDMI cable to the TV, and select the HDMI input you used. Start the downloaded title in the Netflix app.
Netflix’s cable and mirroring guidance lists device-specific conditions:
- Android phone or tablet: A video cable or adapter may connect it to a TV or display. For HDMI, the adapter must support video playback. For other USB-C or Thunderbolt cables, Netflix specifies support for high-resolution video playback and USB 3.1 or later.
- iPhone or iPad with Lightning: Netflix identifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter and lists compatible model numbers A1438 or A1621.
- USB-C iPhone or iPad: For an HDMI display, use an adapter that supports video playback. Netflix recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter while noting that other adapters may work. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output.
Netflix warns that device or adapter incompatibility can prevent playback, and that some adapters are unsupported. Check the exact phone or tablet and adapter before buying; a generic cable is not guaranteed to work. Netflix also says it does not support AirPlay, and casting is limited to listed compatible devices. Wireless mirroring is not a dependable substitute for a wired connection when offline.

Use a phone hotspot for live streaming
If cellular service is available where you are, a phone hotspot may give a TV or streaming device internet access for live Netflix streaming. The TV or device must support joining a hotspot, and the connection needs usable cellular coverage. This is streaming—not offline playback—and consumes mobile data. Netflix’s supported-device page establishes the internet requirement but does not confirm compatibility for every hotspot and TV combination, so check both device makers’ instructions.

If you have cellular service on your phone but no Wi-Fi, Netflix allows downloads over a mobile network by turning off the Wi-Fi-only restriction. Its documented steps are:

- When Netflix prompts you to wait for Wi-Fi, choose Download Settings or Download Now.
- Switch off Wi-Fi Only.
- Open Downloads and tap Download for the title.
Changing the setting does not start a pending download immediately, and pending downloads may prevent you from changing the setting. Downloading over cellular uses your mobile plan’s data allowance; Netflix does not quantify the data used on its help page. See How to download using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
Do not confuse manual cellular downloads with Downloads for You. That separate automatic feature works when connected to Wi-Fi, is listed for Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad with the latest app, and is unavailable on ad-supported plans (How to use ‘Downloads for You’).

Prepare before you lose internet
- Download the specific shows or movies you want, and confirm each download completes.
- Check that the Netflix app is signed in on the device that holds the downloads.
- Test the phone-to-TV adapter, cable, and HDMI input while you still have time to troubleshoot.
- Confirm your phone or tablet supports wired video output; a matching connector alone does not ensure compatibility.
- If using a hotspot, check cellular coverage and your data allowance before streaming.
Netflix’s statement that an internet connection is not required after initial download, setup, and login appears on its page about offline play for games, not TV shows or movies. Do not treat it as proof that a TV app can play downloaded films. For shows and movies, the workable offline route described here is a supported mobile device with a completed download, connected to the TV by compatible wired video output.
