Which game is better?
There is no single winner for every player because the games prioritize different kinds of fantasy. Watch Dogs gives you a lone operator whose hacking is tied to a family loss and a revenge mission. Watch Dogs 2 gives you Marcus, a group of DedSec allies and a campaign aimed at exposing the way ctOS 2.0 and powerful organizations use personal data. The practical choice is between a tightly personal crime story and a more social hacktivist adventure.
- Pick Watch Dogs if Aiden’s serious motivation, Chicago’s tense surveillance mood and infrastructure-focused disruption are the main attractions.
- Pick Watch Dogs 2 if you prefer Marcus and DedSec, a brighter Bay Area setting, more irreverent humor and remote tools that let you scout before entering a restricted area.
- Pick based on platform if you own older hardware: Ubisoft lists the original for PS3 and Xbox 360, whereas Watch Dogs 2 is listed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Watch Dogs: Aiden Pearce, Chicago and city infrastructure
A personal revenge premise
Ubisoft describes Aiden Pearce as a hacker and former thug whose criminal past contributes to a violent family tragedy. The story then frames his actions around revenge in Chicago. That motivation keeps the campaign centered on one character’s history rather than on a large team with competing personalities. You are generally interpreting the city through Aiden’s investigation and retaliation.
The original’s premise is intentionally fictional. It uses a connected-city conceit to make surveillance cameras, traffic controls and utilities interactive game objects; it is not a realistic guide to compromising municipal infrastructure. TIME’s review likewise treats the hacking premise as a gameplay device rather than a model of real cybersecurity. Read the systems as abstractions designed for missions, puzzles and escapes.
Chicago as a surveillance-heavy world
Chicago is more than a backdrop because the city’s network is the central instrument of play. TIME characterizes the game’s version of Chicago as paranoid and saturated with surveillance. Cameras provide sight lines, while connected devices create opportunities to distract, trap or delay pursuers. The mood supports Aiden’s isolation: the city is useful, but it also constantly watches him.

The darker presentation is a critical interpretation, not an objective measurement of color, lighting or emotional response. Players who want an urban thriller with a serious protagonist are more likely to connect with this presentation than players looking for a playful ensemble.
What you can hack
Ubisoft’s official description specifically highlights three infrastructure interactions: stopping traffic lights, detonating gas lines and turning off the electrical grid. These actions can alter the space around a target, create an opening during a pursuit or turn an environmental object into a hazard. The same description presents hacking alongside combat and driving, so encounters are not limited to watching cameras from a safe distance.

Steam’s product description also presents a combination of hacking, combat, driving and multiplayer. That list is a feature summary, not evidence that every activity is equally important in every mission. The documented comparison is that the first game makes the city’s infrastructure itself a weapon and combines those disruptions with conventional movement and fighting.
How the original feels to play
Aiden’s toolkit supports a direct, situational style: observe through cameras, interfere with the environment, move by car or on foot, and fight when the plan goes wrong. The city-system premise means a traffic light or power switch can matter as much as a firearm in the right chase or infiltration sequence. The sources do not establish a universal ranking for the original’s stealth, combat, mission design or enemy AI, so those areas should be judged as personal preferences rather than settled facts.
Watch Dogs 2: Marcus Holloway, DedSec and the Bay Area
From lone revenge to collective resistance
Watch Dogs 2 follows Marcus Holloway as he joins DedSec to oppose ctOS 2.0 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ubisoft’s premise places the group against a system that can classify, monitor and manipulate citizens. The story therefore shifts the emotional center from one family’s loss to a team exposing institutional and corporate misuse of data.
DedSec changes the social texture of missions. Instead of treating hacking solely as Aiden’s personal weapon, the sequel presents it as a shared project with a crew identity. GamesRadar’s October 11, 2026 retrospective describes the campaign as confronting corruption and the corporate weaponization of data. That is a retrospective interpretation of the game’s themes, not a claim that every mission is a realistic depiction of technology policy.
A brighter setting and a different tone
The sequel moves to the San Francisco Bay Area, which reviews describe as brighter and more colorful than the original’s Chicago. TIME characterizes the tone as more irreverent, while GamesRadar emphasizes the setting and DedSec’s attitude. Humor, group banter and a less solemn presentation make the campaign feel deliberately different from Aiden’s revenge story.

TIME reviewer Matt Peckham summarized his view in 2016 by writing that “Watch Dogs 2 steps up the story” and trades the earlier game’s “self-important blather” for “charming for-the-lulz irreverence.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal consensus, but it clearly identifies the sequel’s intended tonal shift.

Watch Dogs 2 retains camera-based infiltration and environmental interference, then adds two deployable devices. TIME’s review describes the two-wheeled ground robot as a proxy for reaching tight or dangerous spaces and the quadcopter as a reconnaissance tool that can scout and mark targets. These devices let Marcus gather information or interact with a location without immediately placing his character inside it.
- Ground robot: send it into spaces Marcus cannot safely or conveniently enter, using it as a remote proxy during an infiltration.
- Quadcopter: gain an elevated view, survey a location and mark targets before committing to a route.
- Combined effect: approach planning can begin remotely, so the question is not only which city object to hack but also which device should perform the scouting or access work.
Peckham called these additions useful in stealth puzzles. That wording belongs to the review; it should not be read as proof that every player will find the sequel’s stealth universally better.

If you want a revenge thriller
Watch Dogs is the closer fit when the protagonist’s personal loss should drive the entire campaign. Aiden’s history as a hacker and former thug, the family tragedy and Chicago’s surveillance-heavy atmosphere create a serious, inward-looking framework. The city’s systems reinforce that framework by making every pursuit feel connected to a monitored urban network.

If you want a crew-focused hacktivist story
Watch Dogs 2 is the better thematic match when you want Marcus to work within a group and challenge a wider system. DedSec’s opposition to ctOS 2.0 shifts the stakes toward surveillance, data manipulation and institutional power. The brighter Bay Area and irreverent tone make the same basic hacking fantasy feel less like solitary retaliation and more like coordinated disruption.
If tone matters more than chronology
You do not need to choose solely by release order. The original launched on May 27, 2014, and the sequel on November 13, 2016, according to Ubisoft. The sequel’s story and tools are designed as a different experience, so a player who prefers its tone can begin there. Playing the original first can provide context for how the series’ city-hacking premise developed, but the documented premise comparison does not require a specific play order.

Are the hacking mechanics realistic?
No. The games fictionalize hacking so that a player can trigger traffic controls, utilities, cameras and other connected systems instantly during action. TIME’s review of the original explicitly treats this as a gameplay conceit. The mechanics are useful for understanding the games’ design, but they are not instructions for accessing real networks, bypassing security or interfering with public infrastructure.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose your protagonist: Aiden Pearce for a solitary revenge narrative; Marcus Holloway for a team-based DedSec campaign.
- Choose your mood: Chicago’s paranoid, surveillance-heavy presentation; or the Bay Area’s brighter setting and more irreverent tone.
- Choose your preferred planning tools: infrastructure disruption and camera use in the original; those systems plus a ground robot and quadcopter in the sequel.
- Check your hardware: the original has the broader old-generation platform list; Watch Dogs 2 is officially listed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
- Verify the current store page: confirm region, edition, price, compatibility and online-service details because those items are not fixed by the historical platform listings.
Final recommendation
Watch Dogs remains the right choice for a darker Chicago revenge story in which city infrastructure is Aiden Pearce’s main tactical advantage. Watch Dogs 2 is the stronger fit for players who want Marcus Holloway, DedSec’s collective perspective, a brighter Bay Area world and remote scouting through a ground robot and quadcopter. “Better” depends on whether you value personal drama and mood or broader infiltration options and a more playful hacktivist crew.
