Waste seaweed can bind dissolved metal ions in controlled experiments, a process called biosorption. But “mops up” is a metaphor: results vary by seaweed, metal and water chemistry, and moving metal out of water leaves metal-loaded biomass that still has to be managed. The studies described here do not establish a proven, commercial-scale cleanup method.
Can seaweed remove heavy metals from water?
Yes, some processed or nonliving seaweed biomass can remove dissolved metals from water under experimental conditions. Results are specific to the material and test: a reported capacity or removal percentage is not a general performance rating for seaweed, nor does it show that the method will work equally well in industrial wastewater.
For example, a 2005 study of alkali-pretreated, nonliving Ulva reported Langmuir maximum-capacity parameters of 60–90 mg/g for cadmium, zinc and copper. The study also noted that processing the biomass in mesh made it easier to separate from solution. These values describe that study’s material and conditions, not a guaranteed treatment outcome. Under the thesis’s experimental conditions, it reported 90% removal within five minutes and a concentration of 0.9 mg L-1 after one hour, starting from 10 mg L-1. The same thesis reported binding capacities of 1.2 mmol g-1 for cadmium, 0.5 for lead, 1.6 for nickel, 0.8 for copper, 1.2 for chromium, 0.4 for silver, 0.9 for aluminium and 0.4 for gold. Those figures apply to its tested dealginated biomass and conditions; they should not be compared as if all metals or seaweed preparations were tested in the same way. Read the thesis record

How does seaweed bind metals?
Seaweed biomass has chemical sites that can interact with dissolved ions. In the dealginated-seaweed thesis, the evidence supported ion exchange: roughly one mole of calcium was displaced for each mole of cadmium bound. Esterifying the biomass reduced sorption, which points to carboxyl groups as important binding sites. The thesis also found other interactions for aluminium and gold, so there is no single mechanism that explains every metal-seaweed combination. Sheffield Hallam University thesis
In practical terms, biosorption transfers some metal from the water phase onto or into the biomass. It does not destroy the metal. Any treatment proposal therefore has two problems to solve: how to separate the loaded seaweed and how to manage or recover the metals afterward.

Why results change with the water
“Heavy metals” are not one uniform target. Metal identity and oxidation state matter, as do pH, pretreatment, salinity and competing ions. A result from one combination of seaweed and water cannot safely be generalized to another.

pH and pretreatment
In the Ulva study, alkaline pretreatment increased cadmium sorption, and the reported strong function was around pH 8. The dealginated-seaweed thesis reported optima around pH 6–8 for cadmium, lead, nickel, copper and chromium, but around pH 3–4 for aluminium and gold. These are study-specific observations, not operating instructions for treating a real wastewater stream. Ulva study; dealginated-seaweed thesis

Metal form and competing ions
A 2006 comparison using brown seaweed found different uptake behavior among metals and oxidation states. At pH 5, arsenate [As(V)] did not bind in the tested system, while chromium [Cr(III)] behaved very differently from chromium [Cr(VI)]. In that tested Sargassum system, higher ionic strength lowered maximum uptake by 10–36% for many cationic metals, with cobalt and lead as exceptions, and lowered affinity constants by 33–91%. Sodium interference was attributed to electrostatic interaction. Study record

A 2010 study tested regeneration and reuse of a seaweed-based biosorbent. By the fifth sorption cycle, removal efficiencies in single-metal aqueous solutions were 92% for zinc, 96% for nickel and 94% for aluminium. In multi-metal systems, the corresponding maximum efficiencies were 85%, 82% and 82%. The lower figures in mixed-metal tests illustrate why single-metal results do not necessarily predict performance when several contaminants compete for binding sites. Other studies move toward more realistic settings, but the evidence remains limited. A 2021 article tested five macrophyte species collected from the Black Sea against selected chromium, iron, zinc and copper ions and metallurgical wastewater samples; its accessible abstract does not give numerical removal outcomes. A University of Waterloo thesis deposited on 14 August 2026 evaluated brown seaweed for selected metals in synthetic mining-relevant aqueous solutions, including batch tests and fixed-bed columns. Its record identifies testing in real mining wastewater, regeneration and scale-up as further work. Synthetic mining-relevant water and a wastewater sample are not equivalent to demonstrated, sustained industrial treatment. Thesis repository record

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
- Established in experiments: certain seaweed preparations can bind selected dissolved metal ions, and the amount removed changes with material preparation and water chemistry.
- Not established by these studies: a universal seaweed filter, reliable performance across real industrial wastewater streams, commercial-scale economics, or disposal requirements for metal-loaded biomass.
- Important next steps: test actual wastewater, assess repeated regeneration and treatment performance, and evaluate whether the process can be scaled and how captured metals and biomass will be handled.
