X suffered repeated disruptions on March 10, 2025, and Elon Musk described them as a “massive cyberattack.” But that claim did not establish who was responsible or why. The next day, a U.S. official told the Associated Press that the government had not identified an actor or found specific intelligence pointing to one. Reports about DOGE protests and demonstrations or vandalism involving Tesla sites provide political context—not evidence that protesters caused the X outage.

What happened to X on March 10, 2025?

Users reported repeated disruptions to X on March 10. Musk, the platform’s owner, said it was under a “massive cyberattack.” The Associated Press quoted him saying, “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,” attributing the characterization to Musk rather than presenting it as a confirmed forensic finding. Associated Press, March 10, 2025.

An outage is evidence that a service was disrupted; by itself, it does not show whether the cause was a cyberattack, identify an attacker, or reveal a motive. Musk’s statement is a claim about the cause and scale, not public proof of those further details.

Was the attacker identified?

Not in the contemporaneous reporting. On March 11, the Associated Press reported that a U.S. official said the government had not determined who was behind the apparent attack and had no specific intelligence identifying an actor. The official was unnamed in the report, so the assessment should not be attributed to a named agency spokesperson or treated as a final investigative finding. Associated Press, March 11, 2025.

What did the technical reporting say?

AP also reported security researcher Kevin Beaumont’s view that the IP addresses involved were worldwide, rather than limited to Ukraine, and that a Mirai variant botnet was involved. That is Beaumont’s technical interpretation as relayed by AP; it is not a public identification of who operated the botnet. Geographic distribution of IP addresses, an assessment of attack method, the operator’s identity, and the operator’s motive are separate questions. Associated Press.

Were the outage and the protests connected?

Reports placed protests against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as well as demonstrations and vandalism involving Tesla sites, in the same news cycle. That establishes timing and political context. The reporting reviewed here does not establish that the protests caused the X outage, that protesters were responsible for an attack, or that the outage was retaliation connected to Tesla or DOGE. The Guardian, March 10, 2025.

Claims about cause require more than events occurring around the same time. Evidence tying a protest to an outage would need to connect the people involved and their actions to the technical incident; the cited coverage does not make that connection.
