In October 2019, Mara Group launched the Mara X and Mara Z in Rwanda. News reports at the time described them as the first smartphones manufactured entirely in Africa—but that claim referred to the reported scope of production at Mara’s factory, not proof that every component or raw material came from the continent.
What made the Mara phones stand out?
Fast Company reported that Mara manufactured the phones “from the motherboards to the packaging” at its new Rwandan factory. That was a broader production scope than simple assembly: the 2019 coverage said phone plants elsewhere in Africa assembled devices using components imported from China and other countries. Fast Company’s October 9, 2019 report and Futurism’s October 11, 2019 coverage framed this difference as the basis for calling Mara’s phones the first made entirely in Africa.
“Made completely in Africa” should not be read as evidence that every part, material, or upstream supplier was African. The reports describe production at the Mara factory; they do not establish the origin of every component or raw material, nor do they independently prove a comprehensive historical first.
Which phones launched, and what did they cost?
Both models ran Android. The storage and prices below are figures reported at launch in October 2019, not current prices or confirmation that the phones remain available.

Fast Company reported these specifications and launch prices. The contemporaneous coverage described the phones as more expensive than alternatives available in the area, but it does not provide a current comparison or establish today’s market prices.
Why was the launch significant in Rwanda?
The launch was presented as part of Rwanda’s effort to develop as an innovation and technology hub. The reporting also described Mara’s pitch in terms of local economic support and pride in a product made in Africa. Those are accounts of the company’s launch-era context, not evidence about current policy or consumer opinion.

Futurism attributed this statement to Rwanda President Paul Kagame: “The Mara Phone joins a growing list of high-quality products that are made in our country.” The same article reported Kagame calling the facility Africa’s “first high tech smartphone factory.”
What the “first-ever” claim does—and does not—establish
The phrase “first-ever” appeared in contemporaneous headlines, including Futurism’s October 2019 title. The support presented in these reports is narrower: Mara’s factory was described as producing phones from motherboards through packaging, unlike facilities characterized as assembling imported components.
