Yes—according to Sanyo in a March 2, 2007 report, the overheating problem was limited to an optional, large-capacity battery pack designed for Lenovo notebooks. Sanyo said other PC makers used different pack designs. Its investigation linked all five reported overheating cases to packs visibly damaged after laptops were dropped. The report does not provide affected Lenovo model numbers or battery part numbers, so it cannot identify a specific replacement today.
What did Sanyo say was recalled?
EE Times reported that Sanyo Electric Co. attributed the issue to a Lenovo-specific optional battery pack, designed to Lenovo’s notebook specifications. Sanyo’s position was that the problem did not extend to batteries made for other PC vendors because their pack designs differed. A Sanyo spokesman said, “The pack design for other PC vendors’ models are different. We believe the trouble won’t spread to other PCs.”
The report distinguished this case from earlier recalls involving Sony-made batteries in Dell computers. Sanyo cited a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission statement that the cause was not an internal lithium-ion cell defect. That is Sanyo’s reported explanation in 2007, not evidence about every battery-related incident or later recall.

The report described a physical difference between the optional longer-life Lenovo pack and a standard pack:

The additional cells were part of the longer-life pack’s design. The article does not establish that cell count alone caused the overheating.
What did Sanyo say caused the overheating cases?
According to the EE Times account of Sanyo’s investigation, all five overheating cases involved battery packs that had been visibly damaged when the laptops were dropped. That finding links the reported incidents to physical damage; it does not establish that every dropped laptop battery will overheat, or that an undamaged pack is safe in all circumstances.

The report does not name the affected Lenovo notebook models, battery part numbers, serial ranges, or current replacement stock. It therefore cannot confirm whether a particular battery in a reader’s possession was included.

How to approach a replacement battery
Do not choose a replacement based only on the Lenovo brand or a similar-looking battery. Match the battery to the exact notebook model and the identifier printed on the original battery or specified by Lenovo for that model. The 2007 report supplies no identifiers with which to make that match.

- Compatibility: Verify the exact notebook model and battery part number, not just the product family.
- Capacity and runtime: Compare the replacement’s stated capacity and intended runtime with the battery specified for the notebook.
- Safety and traceability: Look for applicable safety certification and a seller that can be identified and contacted. The 2007 report does not establish certification for any current listing.
- Returns and warranty: Check the seller’s warranty and return conditions before purchase.
- Old battery: Follow local battery-recycling or hazardous-waste guidance rather than putting a damaged lithium-ion pack in household rubbish.
If a battery is visibly damaged, swollen, unusually hot, or otherwise abnormal, stop using and charging it. Keep it away from combustible materials if you can do so safely, and seek guidance from Lenovo or an appropriate local battery-disposal service. Do not attempt to identify a recalled pack by its appearance alone.
