There is no accessible official confirmation that Steven Quay was hired by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Reporting says he was a finalist for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director role, while a separate Science report said he appeared in an NIH directory. A directory listing, on its own, does not establish that he was formally appointed.

Who is Steven Quay?

Steven Quay is a pharmaceutical executive and author described in reporting as a proponent of the COVID-19 lab-leak hypothesis. The label “the anti-Fauci” refers to the possible NIAID leadership role at the center of the reports; it does not mean Quay was appointed to replace Anthony Fauci.

Quay’s book, The Origin of the Virus: The Hidden Truths Behind the Microbe That Killed Millions, argues for a lab origin. That is his position on viral origins, not an established conclusion.

Was Quay hired as NIAID director?

The available reporting supports that Quay was considered for the position, not that he was appointed. KFF Health News, summarizing a Politico report on Aug. 5, 2026, said NIH staff reportedly declined to advance Quay’s application, but Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. selected him as a finalist. A report published Aug. 4 said final vetting was still underway. The distinction matters: a finalist remains under consideration, and vetting is not an appointment.

The reporting does not establish the eventual outcome of that process. The NIH press-room and director-statements pages consulted did not provide public confirmation of Quay’s appointment.

What does the NIH directory listing mean?

A Science report carried the headline “‘The anti-Fauci’? Lab-leak proponent listed in NIH directory but denies being hired.” A Reddit post linking to that report reproduced a passage describing directory images that reportedly showed an HHS employee number and a physical address in the suite formerly occupied by Fauci and his staff.

That account is a reported directory finding, not proof by itself that Quay was hired. The underlying Science article and directory record were not accessible for direct examination, and the accessible NIH material did not explain the listing or confirm Quay’s employee status. The status represented by the employee number, and the date and context of the directory entry, are therefore not established by the accessible material.

How to read the evidence

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish
KFF Health News’s Aug. 5, 2026 summary of Politico reporting Quay was reportedly a finalist after NIH staff declined to advance his application; final vetting was reported as ongoing on Aug. 4. A completed appointment or the final outcome of the selection process.
The directory detail reported by Science, as surfaced through its headline and a Reddit post linking to the article A report that directory images listed Quay and included an HHS employee number and an office address. What the listing or number meant, whether it reflected formal employment, or when and why the entry was made.
Accessible NIH public pages The pages consulted did not return public confirmation of Quay’s appointment. Whether he was hired or held another status not described on those pages.

These are different kinds of evidence: selection-process reporting describes consideration, while a directory entry is an administrative record whose meaning depends on context. Neither, as available here, is equivalent to an official appointment notice.
