Not entirely. During the 2024 Hurricane Helene response, Starlink advertised 30 days of free service in affected areas, but new customers still needed a Starlink kit. The Register reported that its checkout showed a total just under $400 after shipping and tax; it also reported a $120-per-month residential plan after the free period. These are historical terms, not current prices or proof that the offer is still available.
What did “free Starlink” cover?
The promotion covered a limited period of service, not necessarily the equipment needed to connect. In October 2024, The Register reported that new customers had to buy a Starlink kit to use the 30-day service offer in designated Helene-affected areas. Gizmodo reported the same distinction: the service period was promoted as free, while the dish and associated upfront costs were not.
That distinction matters: a free month of connectivity does not mean free hardware or free service indefinitely. The terms below describe reporting from the 2024 response, not an offer readers can assume remains open.
How much did the Starlink kit cost?
The reported amounts describe different price observations and should not be treated as interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
| Reported amount | What it referred to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Just under $400 | Checkout total including shipping and tax | The Register’s observed signup flow in October 2024; not a current quote. |
| $350 | Regular kit price | Reported by The Register in October 2024. |
| $299 | Disaster-relief kit price | The Register said this price had been reported elsewhere but did not appear in the signup page it examined. |
Accordingly, “at least $400” is best understood as a description of the near-$400 historical checkout total reported by The Register, which included shipping and tax—not as a verified price for the terminal alone or a claim that every survivor paid that amount. Gizmodo also described the upfront cost as approximately $400.
What happened after the 30 days?
For new subscribers, The Register reported that the offer transitioned after 30 days to a residential subscription costing $120 per month; Gizmodo reported the same historical monthly figure. It was a recurring plan price reported in October 2024, not a current rate.

The process differed for existing customers. The Register reported that customers seeking waived service charges had to contact Starlink support and submit a ticket for review. The reporting does not establish that every existing customer received a waiver or that all customers faced identical terms.

Even when a service period is free, timing and infrastructure can determine whether it helps. The Register’s October 2024 reporting described several practical constraints:
Rank #3
- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
- Delivery could take time: The Register cited a two-to-three-week delivery window for some orders, so a terminal might arrive after local internet service had been restored.
- Signup required connectivity: A person needed enough internet access to complete the online signup process.
- The terminal needed power: Starlink equipment requires electricity, which may be a constraint during an outage.
Those hurdles could reduce the offer’s usefulness for someone without connectivity or power, while a service period could matter to someone facing a prolonged loss of cellular and wired networks. That is a practical distinction, not a measured result for all Helene survivors. In The Register’s report, Boone resident Kinney Baughman described the offer as potentially useful in isolated circumstances.
Did Starlink also support disaster response?
Yes. The consumer offer’s upfront cost does not tell the whole story of Starlink’s disaster response. In its 2024 Progress report, Starlink said it supported first responders, search-and-rescue teams, hospitals, schools, police patrols, fire trucks, and residents, and that residents received free Starlink service for the rest of 2024. Starlink also reported more than 300,000 messages sent and received through Direct to Cell in affected areas, along with hundreds of emergency alerts. These are the company’s own retrospective claims, rather than an independent evaluation.

- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
FEMA also lists Starlink among emergency communications tools, but that general context does not verify the consumer promotion’s price or terms. The offer’s kit cost and post-trial subscription are separate questions from whether satellite communications were used in the broader response.

The identified offer and prices concern the 2024 Hurricane Helene response. The available reporting does not establish that the promotion remains open in 2026, or what Starlink hardware and service cost today. Anyone considering Starlink now should check the current offer and checkout terms directly rather than relying on the historical figures in this article.
