Sobald die Ursache und passende Maßnahme feststehen, beschreibt ein Runbook, wie diese Maßnahme konkret ausgeführt wird. Kurz: Das Playbook strukturiert die Entscheidung, das Runbook die Durchführung.
Playbook und Runbook im direkten Vergleich
Die Begriffe werden nicht überall identisch verwendet. In der Incident-Management-Praxis liegt der zentrale Unterschied darin, ob ein Dokument eine noch offene Untersuchung führt oder eine bekannte Aufgabe Schritt für Schritt ausführt.

AWS beschreibt Playbooks als Hilfen zur Untersuchung von Vorfällen, zur Eingrenzung ihrer Auswirkungen und zur Identifikation der Ursache. Wenn die Ursache feststeht, kann das Playbook laut AWS auf ein Runbook zur Behebung verweisen: AWS Well-Architected Framework: Use playbooks to investigate issues. AWS weist außerdem darauf hin, dass Runbook-Aktivitäten Teil eines Playbooks sein oder durch erkannte Ereignisse ein Playbook auslösen können: AWS Well-Architected Framework: Use runbooks to perform procedures.

Wann ist ein Playbook sinnvoll?
Ein Playbook ist passend, wenn das Team zunächst herausfinden muss, was passiert ist und welcher Weg angemessen ist. Es sollte die Untersuchung so strukturieren, dass Beteiligte relevante Informationen zusammentragen, den Umfang einschätzen und wissen, wann sie eskalieren oder kommunizieren müssen.

AWS empfiehlt dafür einen schrittweisen Entdeckungspfad sowie klare Hinweise zu Werkzeugen, Berechtigungen und Eskalation. Ein Playbook muss also nicht jede mögliche technische Handlung selbst enthalten; es kann nach der Diagnose auf eine konkrete Verfahrensanweisung verweisen.
Wann ist ein Runbook sinnvoll?
Ein Runbook eignet sich, wenn das gewünschte Ergebnis und das Verfahren dafür bekannt sind. Die Anleitung sollte so konkret sein, dass eine berechtigte Person die Aufgabe zuverlässig ausführen und prüfen kann, ob sie erfolgreich war.

Wie Playbooks und Runbooks zusammenarbeiten
- Das Team nutzt das Playbook, um Symptome und Auswirkungen zu erfassen und mögliche Ursachen zu prüfen.
- Das Playbook führt zu einer Entscheidung, etwa einer Eskalation oder einer bekannten Behebung.
- Wenn eine konkrete Maßnahme feststeht, verweist das Playbook auf das passende Runbook.
- Die berechtigte Person oder Automatisierung führt das Runbook aus und prüft das erwartete Ergebnis.
So bleiben offene Diagnoseentscheidungen von wiederholbaren Ausführungsschritten getrennt. Ein Ereignis kann außerdem ein Runbook unmittelbar auslösen, oder Runbook-Schritte können in einen größeren Playbook-Ablauf eingebunden sein.

Was „Playbook“ in Ansible bedeutet
In Ansible bezeichnet „Playbook“ nicht einfach ein allgemeines Incident-Dokument. Red Hat definiert ein Ansible Playbook als Automatisierungsentwurf aus Plays und Aufgaben, die auf ein Inventar von Systemen angewendet werden. Die Aufgaben laufen in der festgelegten Reihenfolge; ein Play ordnet Aufgaben bestimmten verwalteten Hosts zu. Siehe die Red-Hat-Dokumentation zu Ansible Playbooks.
Der gemeinsame Begriff bedeutet daher nicht, dass beide Artefakte dasselbe leisten: Ein Incident-Playbook führt typischerweise durch Untersuchung und Entscheidungen; ein Ansible Playbook beschreibt Automatisierungsaufgaben für verwaltete Systeme. Wenn in einem technischen Kontext von „Playbook“ die Rede ist, sollte deshalb zuerst geklärt werden, ob Incident-Management oder Ansible gemeint ist.

AWS, Red Hat und PagerDuty beschreiben praxisorientierte Rollen und konkrete Produkt- beziehungsweise Betriebszusammenhänge, keine weltweit verbindliche Terminologie. Organisationen können Playbook und Runbook anders benennen oder ihre Inhalte zusammenführen. Entscheidend ist, dass im Team klar ist, welches Dokument Diagnose und Entscheidungen abdeckt und welches die sichere, wiederholbare Ausführung beschreibt.
