Samsung’s HBM3E 12H 36GB was planned for Q2 2024 production, but the public record cited here does not confirm that mass production actually began in that quarter. Samsung’s later 2024 statements instead put mass production or supply expansion in the second half. It confirmed that samples had shipped and ramp-up preparations were complete, but did not disclose an actual start date for mass production of this specific product.
What Samsung announced about HBM3E 12H
On February 27, 2024, Samsung Electronics announced development of a 12-high HBM3E memory product with 36GB capacity. Samsung specified bandwidth of up to 1,280 GB/s and said capacity and bandwidth were each more than 50% higher than its HBM3 8H product. These are Samsung’s published specifications and comparisons, not independent test results. Samsung’s announcement.
The “12H” designation refers to twelve stacked DRAM layers. Samsung said its thermal compression non-conductive film (TC NCF) technology let the 12-layer stack retain the same height specification as an 8-layer product. The company also cited a 7-micrometer gap between chips, elimination of voids between layers, and vertical density more than 20% greater than HBM3 8H. Those packaging details are Samsung’s claims.

These figures describe Samsung’s simulation comparison, not independently verified benchmark results. The company said the higher capacity was designed to address AI service providers’ demand for HBM with greater capacity.

What the Q2 2024 evidence does—and does not—show
The April report explains why Q2 appeared in coverage: it reflected a reported production plan. But the later Samsung statements distinguish several milestones that should not be treated as interchangeable: sending samples, preparing for ramp-up, planning supply expansion, and actually starting mass production. The company confirmed the first two in its Q2 call and described the latter as a second-half plan.
Accordingly, the defensible answer is that Samsung had a reported Q2 production plan, but the sources cited here do not establish that this particular 36GB 12-high part entered mass production in Q2. They also do not establish the specific date mass production began afterward.

Why the distinction matters for buyers and system builders
HBM is a high-bandwidth memory component for advanced computing systems, not a consumer memory stick or an ordinary PC upgrade. Samsung described HBM3E 12H as a product being sampled to customers and discussed supply in relation to customer timelines. The public statements cited above therefore speak to a component development and supply schedule; they do not identify a retail product, consumer compatibility, or an end-user purchase path.
