Yes, NordVPN confirmed unauthorized access to one rented server in Finland in 2018. The company said the server held no user activity logs, usernames, or passwords, and that it found no evidence customer data was accessed. Those assurances are NordVPN’s account, not an independently verified guarantee that no traffic was ever exposed.
What happened in the 2018 NordVPN incident?
NordVPN said an attacker accessed one server it rented in Finland through an insecure remote-management system left by the data-center provider. NordVPN said it did not know the system existed. The provider was not named in the company’s statement, and contemporary reporting also noted that it was unnamed.
In NordVPN’s chronology, the server went online on January 31, 2018. Evidence of compromise appeared on May 3 and indicated likely unauthorized access around March 5. The data center removed the insecure management account on March 20. NordVPN said it learned of the issue on April 13, 2019, ended its relationship with the provider, terminated the server, and had it shredded that day. The incident became public on October 21, 2019. This timeline comes from NordVPN’s account.
NordVPN spokesperson Laura Tyrell told TechCrunch: “One of the data centers in Finland we are renting servers from was accessed with no authorization.” The company later described the event as a single-server incident caused by mistakes at the data-center owner, of which NordVPN said it was unaware.

Was your NordVPN data exposed?
NordVPN said the affected server did not contain user activity logs, usernames, or passwords, and that it found no evidence customer data was accessed. Its spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company’s apps did not send user-created credentials to that server for authentication, so account usernames and passwords could not have been intercepted that way. NordVPN also said an expired private key from the server could not decrypt traffic on other NordVPN servers. These are the company’s reported statements, not independent forensic findings.
In its 2019 year-in-review, NordVPN stated: “However no customer data was affected or accessed by the malicious actor, as the server did not contain any user activity logs, usernames, or passwords. NordVPN’s service as a whole was not hacked, the code was not hacked, the VPN tunnel was not breached, and our apps were unaffected.” That conclusion should be read as NordVPN’s account of the incident, rather than as proof that the server could not have exposed any information under any circumstances.

TechCrunch reported a more limited theoretical concern: a NordVPN spokesperson described a “personalized and complicated man-in-the-middle attack” targeting a single connection attempting to reach NordVPN as the only possible way to abuse website traffic. The outlet also quoted an unnamed security researcher who reviewed the statement and other evidence and raised concerns about what a full remote compromise of the provider’s systems could imply. The reporting did not establish that anyone stole data or intercepted a user’s traffic. Server access is confirmed; actual traffic interception is not.

The reported 2018 incident does not, by itself, establish that NordVPN account passwords were exposed: NordVPN said the affected server did not hold usernames or passwords, and that its apps did not send user-created credentials there for authentication. Changing a password is reasonable if you reused it elsewhere, received a suspicious login alert, or have another reason to believe your account was accessed. Use a unique password and enable any account protections NordVPN currently offers; these steps protect account access but do not change what is known about the historical server incident.

What security changes did NordVPN report?
NordVPN’s 2019 year-in-review said it formed a long-term security partnership with VerSprite, used penetration testers, raised vendor-security standards, and introduced a bug bounty program in December 2019. It also said it planned an independent infrastructure security audit and was building a network of wholly owned colocated servers. The audit and infrastructure buildout were presented as plans in that report, not as completed outcomes.
NordVPN’s current Trust Center describes security assessments, a bug bounty program, incident management, and repeated no-logs verification. These are current company descriptions; audits and security controls can provide evidence about particular systems and periods, but cannot guarantee that a future incident is impossible.

NordVPN’s current support article about retained information says it does not log online activity and keeps encrypted login credentials, an email address, a username, and transaction or order information for account and refund purposes. That present-day policy description is separate from the company’s claim about what was stored on the 2018 server; it does not independently establish the server’s historical contents.
Is the 2026 allegation the same incident?
No. A separate January 2026 report concerned a threat actor’s claim of access to development tools and related data. TechRadar reported that NordVPN denied access to its internal Salesforce environment and said its preliminary analysis found no signs of compromise to its servers or internal production infrastructure. The company reportedly associated configuration material with a third-party trial environment. The report described the investigation as preliminary; it is a distinct allegation, not evidence that the confirmed 2018 server access happened again.

How should you judge what this incident means?
For this event, the strongest established point is narrow: one rented NordVPN server in Finland was accessed without authorization. The company’s claim that no customer data was affected matters, but it should be weighed as a company statement alongside the lack of a reported confirmed interception and the concerns raised in contemporary coverage.
If you are comparing VPN providers, look at the scope and recency of independent audits, how clearly a provider discloses incidents, what data it minimizes or retains, and how it manages data-center and other vendors. The incident alone does not establish a current ranking of VPN services or prove that another provider is safer.
