Yes. In the early hours of December 12, 2021, an unauthorized post appeared on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal Twitter account, @narendramodi. It falsely claimed India had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender and would distribute 500 BTC to residents. The Prime Minister’s Office said the account was quickly secured and told people to ignore posts shared during the compromise.
Was PM Narendra Modi’s Twitter account hacked?
PMO India said Modi’s personal handle, @narendramodi, was “very briefly compromised.” It said the matter was escalated to Twitter and that the account had been secured. The post was deleted after access was restored. The Indian Express reported the incident on December 12, 2021; Reuters, republished by Investing.com, also reported the PMO’s account of the compromise.
PMO India’s official account instructed users: “In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored.” That warning applied to posts shared during the compromise window, not to a government announcement.
What did the Bitcoin tweet say?
The unauthorized post falsely claimed that India had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender and that the government had bought 500 BTC to distribute to residents. The 500 BTC figure was part of the scam message; it does not establish that the government bought or distributed Bitcoin. The post was removed after the account was secured. The Indian Express recorded the post’s claim, and Al Jazeera reported that the false post was deleted.

Was Bitcoin legal tender in India?
No. The tweet was not a real policy announcement. In contemporaneous reporting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had told the Lok Sabha the previous week that the government was not considering a proposal to recognize cryptocurrency as legal tender. That statement provides context for the false claim at the time; it is not a summary of India’s subsequent cryptocurrency rules. The Indian Express reported the parliamentary statement.
Why does the headline say “again”?
“Again” refers to a separate compromise in September 2020 involving a Twitter account associated with Modi’s personal website and app. That account posted requests for cryptocurrency donations. It was not the same account as Modi’s personal @narendramodi handle compromised in December 2021. Reuters and Al Jazeera also noted the earlier incident in their coverage of the 2021 event: Reuters/Investing.com and Al Jazeera.

The September 2020 incident should also not be confused with the much broader July 2020 takeover of prominent Twitter accounts. Although reporting described coordinated social engineering in that separate mass incident, it does not establish how Modi’s account was accessed in December 2021.

The contemporaneous reporting does not establish the access method or identify the attacker. A Twitter spokesperson told The Indian Express: “As per our investigation to date, it appears that the account was not compromised due to any breach of Twitter’s systems.” The wording was a preliminary company assessment—“appears” and “to date”—rather than an independently established explanation of how the account itself was accessed. The Indian Express quoted the statement.

It also does not give a verified victim count, amount of Bitcoin sent, funds recovered, or total financial loss.
