What happened to Doctor Web?

Doctor Web, the Russian anti-malware company also known as Dr.Web, said its network was breached on September 14, 2024. The company disconnected internal servers while it investigated the incident, and customer virus database updates were temporarily interrupted. What did the attackers claim was stolen?

On October 8, 2024, the group DumpForums claimed responsibility. It alleged that it had access to Doctor Web’s network for about a month and stole approximately 10 terabytes of data. The group said the data included information from internal development and collaboration systems, including GitLab, corporate email, Confluence, Redmine, Jenkins, Mantis, and RocketChat. Did hackers steal Doctor Web customer data?

Doctor Web disputed the data-theft claims and said user data was unaffected. SecurityWeek reported the company’s statement: “Our development environment and customer information haven’t been affected by the attack.” That is the company’s assertion, not independent forensic confirmation. The reporting cited here does not provide an independent final accounting of whether, or how much, data was exfiltrated. It therefore does not establish that the alleged 10 terabytes were stolen, nor does it establish that customer information was exposed.

Were Dr.Web virus updates affected?

Yes, temporarily. Doctor Web disconnected internal servers during its investigation, which interrupted virus database updates. Reporting says the company resumed updates after taking remedial steps. This describes an update-service disruption; it does not establish that customer devices were compromised or left unprotected.
