Warren Buffett’s famous Coca-Cola investment is Berkshire Hathaway’s long-held stake: the company had accumulated about $1.3 billion of shares by the early 1990s. A Motley Fool snapshot dated October 3, 2026, put Berkshire’s 400 million shares at $34.7 billion. That market value moves with Coca-Cola’s share price; it is not a fixed valuation. The leadership change is separate: Greg Abel became Berkshire CEO on January 1, 2026, and the Associated Press reported in September that Howard Buffett became chairman while Warren Buffett became chairman emeritus and remained a director.

What was Buffett’s $1.3 billion bet?

It was Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in The Coca-Cola Company, not a personal purchase that should be treated separately from Berkshire’s holdings. Buffett began buying Coca-Cola shares in 1988. By the early 1990s, Berkshire had accumulated about $1.3 billion worth of the stock, according to The Motley Fool’s October 3, 2026 article.

The investment is often used to illustrate the value of holding a durable business for a long time. That is a description of this historical outcome, not a promise that another company or investment will perform similarly.

How much is Berkshire’s Coca-Cola stake worth?

The Motley Fool article reported that Berkshire held 400 million Coca-Cola shares, equal to 9.3% of the company’s shares outstanding, and valued the position at $34.7 billion in its October 3, 2026 market snapshot. The article is the source for these figures; the $34.7 billion value is price-dependent and was not independently established here from a same-date Berkshire filing or share-price calculation.

Measure Reported figure What it means
Accumulated investment About $1.3 billion by the early 1990s Historical amount spent, as reported by The Motley Fool
Shares held 400 million Berkshire’s position in the October 3, 2026 article snapshot
Ownership 9.3% Share of Coca-Cola outstanding shares, per the same snapshot
Market value $34.7 billion Snapshot valuation, not a permanent value

The article also described the shares’ price appreciation as more than 2,500%. That calculation excludes dividends, so it is not a total-return figure. It should not be combined with the dividend estimate below as if both covered a defined, identical return period.

What does the stake pay in dividends?

At the annualized dividend rate of $2.12 per share cited in the October 3 article, 400 million shares would produce about $848 million in annual dividends if that rate remained in force. This income is distinct from the shares’ market value and can change if Coca-Cola changes its dividend.

Coca-Cola Soda Soft Drinks, 12 fl oz Bottles, 8 Pack - Classic Cola Soft Drink Pack
  • Coca-Cola Original Taste — the crisp, refreshing taste you know and love
  • Coke, making life magic since 1886
  • Enjoy delicious and refreshing Coca-Cola sodas to refresh your day
  • 34 mg of caffeine in each 12 fl oz serving
  • 8 pack, 12 fl oz bottles of Coca-Cola

That distinction matters when comparing the original investment with the present-day holding: the reported $1.3 billion is historical cost, $34.7 billion is a market snapshot, and dividends are cash distributions over time. The Motley Fool article quotes former Berkshire vice chairman Charlie Munger: “The first rule of compounding: Never interrupt it unnecessarily.” The quotation is reproduced there; it is not a measure of Berkshire’s total return.

What changed in Berkshire Hathaway’s leadership?

The chairman transition followed a separate CEO succession. The dates clarify why Berkshire’s proxy statement and later news coverage describe different leadership arrangements.

Berkshire’s 2026 proxy statement described Warren Buffett as chairman when that earlier document was prepared. It is therefore a snapshot of the earlier arrangement, not evidence that the September transition did not occur. The AP report is the source for the later change.

In Berkshire’s 2025 annual letter, Abel wrote: “To invest in Berkshire has long been a vote of trust in our founder – a trust that now rests with Berkshire.” The statement frames the succession as a transfer of investor confidence as well as executive responsibility; it does not change the ownership or market value of Berkshire’s Coca-Cola position.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

  • They describe a remarkable historical outcome. The reported position grew substantially in market value over decades, while continuing to generate dividends at the cited rate.
  • They are not a complete total-return calculation. The reported price-appreciation percentage excludes dividends, and no defined period or full dividend reinvestment calculation is provided.
  • They do not make the valuation permanent. Berkshire’s stake value changes as Coca-Cola’s share price changes; the $34.7 billion figure belongs to the October 3, 2026 article snapshot.
  • They do not establish a future result. A successful historic holding cannot show that Coca-Cola, Berkshire, or any other security will deliver comparable returns from today’s prices.
