Warp is no longer an obvious reject if you need Windows or Linux support, or if you want a terminal you can use without paying: its official downloads list macOS, Windows, and Linux, and its billing FAQ describes a Free plan with core terminal features. The better reason to switch is fit. Choose Ghostty for a lighter, composable workflow; WezTerm or Alacritty for cross-platform use; kitty for its feature set across macOS, Linux, and BSD; or iTerm2 if you want a macOS-only option and are already invested in its ecosystem.
Which Warp objections are outdated?
“Warp does not support Windows or Linux”
That blanket claim is stale. Warp’s official download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux, including Windows 10/11 installers and packages for several Linux distributions. Availability does not guarantee that every device or setup is trouble-free, so check Warp’s current known issues and compatibility guidance before switching for a specific machine.
“You have to pay for ordinary terminal use”
Warp’s billing FAQ describes a Free plan with core terminal features and says individuals can use Warp independently without billing. AI allowances and paid-plan limits can change; consult the live pricing page for current limits rather than relying on an old credit quota.

These are two common objections that current official information contradicts, not a verified account of the exact reasons given in another article. They also do not settle whether Warp’s integrated workflow is right for you.

How should you choose an alternative?
Start with the difference that will actually change your day-to-day work. Warp is an integrated, agent-oriented workspace; other terminals can offer a more configurable or deliberately lighter environment, but may leave you to assemble the rest of your tooling.
- Platform: Confirm support for the operating systems you use, including any BSD requirement.
- Workflow: Decide whether you want AI and workspace features built into the terminal or prefer to bring your own tools.
- Configuration: Choose between settings, a text configuration file, or a scripting language you are comfortable maintaining.
- Migration: Check which keybindings, shell integrations, and settings you will need to recreate. Do not assume configurations transfer between terminals.
- Privacy: If prompts must remain on-device, verify the complete data path. A provider’s no-training commitment is not the same as keeping data local.

Ghostty: a lighter terminal with tools you choose
Thoughtworks’ Technology Radar, Volume 34, published in April 2026, describes Ghostty as a potential fit for teams that prefer a lightweight, composable terminal and want to bring their own AI tooling. It contrasts that approach with Warp’s more integrated, “batteries-included” philosophy. This is an editorial assessment, not a speed benchmark. Pick Ghostty if you want to compose your own workflow rather than rely on an all-in-one terminal workspace.

WezTerm: cross-platform reach with Lua configuration
The September 2026 comparison lists WezTerm for macOS, Linux, Windows, and BSD, with configuration in Lua. It is a reasonable shortlist candidate when using one terminal across several of those systems matters and scripting configuration suits you.
Alacritty: cross-platform and configured with TOML
The same comparison lists Alacritty for macOS, Linux, Windows, and BSD, and identifies TOML as its configuration format. Consider it if you want a configurable terminal rather than Warp’s bundled agent-oriented workspace. The comparison establishes platform and configuration facts, not a performance advantage.

kitty: a distinct feature set across macOS, Linux, and BSD
kitty is listed for macOS, Linux, and BSD. Its feature set may suit a particular workflow, but support for a platform does not guarantee compatibility with every protocol, shell setup, or tool you use. Check the project documentation for the specific features you depend on.
iTerm2: a macOS-only option with a migration path to Warp
iTerm2 is listed as macOS-only. If you are weighing a move from it to Warp, Warp’s migration guide documents an importer that can transfer selected iTerm2 themes, fonts, keybindings, and hotkey windows. That can reduce setup work, but it is not a promise of complete configuration parity.

What to know about Warp’s AI privacy controls
Warp’s billing FAQ says model providers commit not to train on customer-generated data processed through Warp services and to delete inputs and outputs after the relevant generation within a fixed period. Warp says individuals can enable full Zero Data Retention (ZDR) by turning off “Help Improve Warp” in Settings > Privacy. Business and Enterprise administrators can enforce ZDR organization-wide.
Warp also describes bring-your-own-key (BYOK) support for OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, plus custom endpoints for OpenAI-compatible inference. Availability and restrictions differ by organization size and plan. These are Warp’s descriptions of its controls and provider commitments, not an independent assessment of whether they meet a particular organization’s compliance requirements. If your requirement is that prompts never leave the device, verify the full end-to-end data path instead of treating a no-training policy as local processing.
How much migration work should you expect?
Warp documents migration guidance for several common terminals. The iTerm2 importer is the clearest documented example: it can bring over selected themes, fonts, keybindings, and hotkey windows. For other source terminals, review your shell integration, keybindings, and configuration separately; the available guidance does not establish one-click parity across every terminal.
