Yes. In Owlcat Games’ upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, you can accuse a suspect after logging even thin evidence, keep investigating to test your theory, or deliberately blame the wrong person or group. The consequences may shape story branches, rewards, NPC attitudes, and endings—but the developer has not said every false accusation produces the same result.

Can you accuse someone before you have strong evidence?

Yes. Owlcat Senior Narrative Designer Veronika Larionova told PC Gamer that players may accuse a suspect once evidence against them has been logged, even if the case rests only on a hunch. You can continue investigating instead: further clues may strengthen the accusation, or reveal evidence that clears the suspect.

That creates an important distinction between authority and truth. In the setting, the Inquisition’s verdict is treated as truth; an accusation accepted by the authorities does not necessarily mean you discovered what actually happened.

Can you knowingly pin a crime on the wrong person?

Yes. Larionova confirmed that deliberately false blame is possible, saying, “Moments like that will definitely happen.” The choice can reflect your own convictions or those of your patrons. It is not a guaranteed shortcut to a particular reward: consequences depend on the case and the decisions around it.

Owlcat says choices may affect story branches, rewards, how non-player characters react, and additional endings. The interview does not promise that all these effects occur after every accusation.

How investigations work

The announced investigation system combines familiar detective-game tools, such as clue cards and a detective board, with narrative deductions, companion input, crime-scene examination, and reconstructions of events. The basic loop is to collect evidence, weigh competing interpretations, and decide whether to act or keep looking.

Evidence and the detective journal

Your acolyte’s detective journal gathers, sorts, and stores evidence. Some cases may call for a chain of deductions. Owlcat says luck can sometimes help, but that does not mean every mystery can be solved randomly or that collecting evidence is irrelevant: the world and its characters may react to what you uncovered.

Specialist tools

A rare device called a Servo-Ossuarium—made up of servo-skull assistants—can track suspicious trails, intercept signals, and analyze data. Other inquisitors may share devices with you. Owlcat’s investigation-system announcement also describes the broader detective framework; specific mechanics may change while the game remains in development.

What companions contribute

Companions bring their own knowledge and experience. They can help gather evidence in conversations with suspects and suggest possible solutions, but they do not solve mysteries independently. Their conclusions are opinions for you to consider, not automatic answers.

Accuse early or investigate further?

Owlcat has not published success rates or said one approach is generally optimal. The trade-off is about what you know and what sort of Inquisitor you want to play.

Approach What it means What is established
Accuse after finding thin evidence Act on an early theory instead of waiting for a fuller case. You can accuse once some evidence is logged. The accusation may be strengthened or undermined by later discoveries.
Keep investigating Gather more clues before deciding whom to blame. Further evidence can add detail or clear a suspect; reactions may depend on what you collected.
Knowingly blame the wrong person or group Choose a verdict that does not match what you believe happened. Owlcat confirms this is possible, but does not specify a uniform benefit or consequence.

Choose based on roleplay as much as certainty: an Inquisitor may value a defensible conclusion, rapid action, political advantage, or obedience to a patron. The available interview supports those possibilities as player discretion, not a promise that any one motive will be rewarded.

Is Dark Heresy about playing like Gregor Eisenhorn?

Eisenhorn inspired the developers, but Owlcat says the game leans more toward the classic approach of the Dark Heresy tabletop role-playing game than toward simply letting players play as the character from Dan Abnett’s novels. Larionova described roleplaying freedom as a strength of the CRPG and said fans of the Eisenhorn trilogy can experience choices with comparable weight.

As she put it, “We lean more toward the classic approach found in the Dark Heresy tabletop RPG rulebooks.” That leaves room to follow an Eisenhorn-like personal code, but it does not mean the game adapts the novels or requires you to make Eisenhorn’s choices.

What is confirmed about the game?

Games Workshop’s 22 May 2025 announcement describes Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy as an upcoming, grimdark, party-based, story-driven cRPG. Players take the role of Inquisition acolytes, lead investigations, uncover conspiracies, engage in tactical combat, and wage a secret war against heresy. That announcement does not establish a launch date, platform list, or current availability.

The game is in development, so its mechanics may change. Larionova summed up the intended moral frame this way: “Just remember that there are no right or wrong choices, only choices whose consequences the inhabitants of the Scintilla system will have to live with.”
