Brise-soleil—external fins, screens, or overhangs—can keep direct sun from striking glazing while still admitting daylight. The best design is not simply the deepest or most decorative one: it responds to the façade’s orientation, the sun’s angle, the local climate, the glazing, and whether winter sun is welcome.
These ten ideas are design approaches, not a list of ten verified buildings. Their appearance can inspire a façade, but dimensions and performance need to be worked out for the specific site.
Why put the shade outside?
Exterior shading intercepts solar radiation before it passes through glazing. The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment describes external shading as the best-performing option for reducing heat gain, and New Zealand Building Performance notes that glazing treatments are less effective than external shading. Interior blinds can still help with glare and privacy, but they do not stop sunlight at the outside of the glass.

That does not mean every window needs a permanent barrier. Scottish Government guidance says shading should limit summer overheating while allowing useful winter solar gain and natural light. Too much shade can reduce daylight or block desirable winter sun, so the design needs to suit the room and its use.

Match the form to the sun
Start with the façade’s exposure at the hours when overheating or glare is a problem. Horizontal elements can intercept higher-angle sun; low-angle sun on east- and west-facing façades is harder to control with a horizontal overhang alone. Vertical fins, adjustable louvers, or layered screens may be more appropriate there.
The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s Guidance on Passive Solar Design and the Scottish Government’s Building standards technical handbook 2019: non-domestic both stress orientation and solar angle. YourHome, an Australian Government resource, likewise describes choosing shading in relation to exposure in its Shading guidance.
10 brise-soleil ideas to consider
1. Deep horizontal overhang
A projecting roof edge or canopy gives a façade a strong, simple line and can shade higher-angle sun. Check how its depth affects daylight and winter solar access at the actual window; a deeper projection is not automatically a better one.

2. Horizontal louvre band
A row of horizontal blades creates a measured rhythm across the façade. Fixed or adjustable blades can be configured for higher-angle sun, but blade depth, spacing, and tilt all affect the balance of shade and light.
3. Vertical fins
Repeated vertical blades make a more sculptural screen and can help address lower-angle sun, particularly on east- and west-facing façades. Their spacing and projection should be assessed against the direction and hours of exposure.
4. Wraparound screen with changing louvre direction
At a corner, the screen can change direction to respond to each façade’s exposure rather than continuing one uniform pattern. New Zealand passive-solar guidance describes louvre orientation changing around a façade; the appropriate geometry still depends on the site.

- MULTI SETTING USE: Ideal for patios, decks, pergolas, porches, balconies, gazebos, and carports-indoors or outdoors. Our sun shade provides customizable cooling and privacy for commercial and residential applications
5. Adjustable external louvers
Movable blades let occupants change shade and daylight conditions as the sun shifts. That control comes with trade-offs: exterior moving devices can affect views and need maintenance, so access and upkeep belong in the design conversation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Deep pergola
A pergola can create a layered threshold between indoors and outdoors, with filtered shade rather than a flat façade plane. YourHome identifies deep pergolas among approaches that can work on east- and west-facing façades. Confirm that its geometry provides useful protection at the relevant times.
7. Timber-batten screen
Timber battens bring texture and warmth while forming a repeating pattern of light and shade. A batten screen’s appearance alone does not establish its performance: orientation, spacing, depth, and the glazing behind it matter.

- ONE ROLL, MANY WINDOWS: Cover multiple house windows from a single roll instead of buying a separate pre-cut kit for each one. The tradeoff is cutting; you will have to measure and cut each piece to fit yourself. Kit includes (1) roll of white shade mesh - 3 ft x 6 ft, (25) EZ Snap fasteners - white, (1) primer pen, and (1) removal tool that lets you take the shades off for cleaning or storage and snap them back on.
8. Bespoke screen made from repurposed elements
Historic England documents a bespoke brise-soleil made from repurposed theatre barn-door lights over a glazed southwest-facing façade. It is a striking example of reuse and custom design, not evidence of quantified energy savings.
9. Light shelf paired with shading
A light shelf can shade glazing from direct sun while reflecting daylight from its upper surface onto the ceiling, helping carry light farther into a room. New Zealand guidance describes this combined approach; its usefulness depends on window and room geometry.

Treat the external screen as one part of a comfort strategy rather than a standalone cooling system. Historic England recommends pairing solar shading with night cooling or ventilation where appropriate; the openings and airflow strategy need to work with the building’s layout and conditions.

How to choose between the ideas
Compare options against the conditions they need to handle rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Exposure: Identify the façade direction and the times of day when direct sun is troublesome. A horizontal overhang suited to high-angle sun may not control low-angle east or west sun.
- Seasonal balance: Decide how much summer shade is needed without unnecessarily blocking winter sun or useful daylight.
- Control: Fixed screens are straightforward in concept; adjustable devices provide user control but introduce moving parts and maintenance needs.
- Daylight and views: Consider how blades or battens will affect the outlook and the amount and distribution of light indoors.
- Construction and upkeep: Have attachment, wind exposure, material durability, and access for maintenance assessed for the specific building.
- Whole-building comfort: Coordinate shade with ventilation or night cooling where suitable, rather than assuming shading alone will resolve overheating.
- Local constraints: Check planning and building requirements that apply to the property before settling on a façade alteration.
The cited guidance establishes these design considerations, but does not provide comparable prices or quantified energy savings for these ten approaches. Ask a designer to assess the specific orientation, glazing, and intended use before treating any visual concept as a performance solution.
