The “$200 million” in the Walgreens freezer-screen story was the amount digital-display company Cooler Screens sought in a contract lawsuit—not a confirmed payment, court award, or established loss. The dispute followed Walgreens’ attempt to use digital cooler and freezer doors for product information and advertising, and later reporting described a breakdown over the contract, service, and invoices.
What were Walgreens’ digital freezer-door screens?
Cooler Screens supplied digital doors for refrigerated and freezer cases. Their displays could show imagery and information about products behind the glass, as well as paid advertising. The idea was to make cooler doors a retail-media surface while helping shoppers see what was available without opening the case. Reports describe that intended function, but do not provide a controlled study showing how the screens affected sales, shopper experience, or advertising revenue.
The installation was commercial equipment managed through a vendor relationship, not a consumer product that shoppers could buy for home use. Its promise depended on more than the display itself: reliable data and internet connections, maintenance, retailer oversight, and agreement about who would pay for service all mattered.

Published figures describe different stages or measures of the proposed deployment, and should not be combined into a single verified inventory. In 2023, Supermarket News described a proposed Smart Door rollout involving approximately 2,500 Walgreens stores. A 2025 ExtremeTech account, republished by Yahoo Tech, described a 45,000-door contract installation target across hundreds of U.S. stores. Fortune, relaying Bloomberg reporting in 2025, described about 10,000 doors installed and another 35,000 planned. Those figures are source-specific accounts of planned or installed equipment, not a reconciled final count.

Why did Walgreens and Cooler Screens end up in court?
Cooler Screens sued Walgreens for breach of contract in June 2023 and sought $200 million in damages, according to Supermarket News and later Fortune reporting. Walgreens also countersued, and later coverage said the retailer wanted to exit the agreement and remove the equipment. The reported $200 million is Cooler Screens’ litigation claim; the cited coverage does not establish that Walgreens paid that amount or that a court awarded it.
The dispute was not just about whether screens belonged on cooler doors. It involved the obligations and costs attached to operating a vendor-managed system across stores: installation, data and connectivity, maintenance, invoices, and eventual removal. The available reporting documents competing positions rather than a final judicial finding on those contractual issues.

What happened during the reported Chicago-area outage?
In January 2025 coverage, Walgreens’ legal account alleged that Cooler Screens cut data feeds to more than 100 Chicago-area stores in December 2023, leaving the displays blank during the holiday season. The coverage said Walgreens sought court relief and that the feeds were restored. These are reported allegations and events, not a court finding that the vendor acted unlawfully.
Cooler Screens CEO Arsen Avakian reportedly gave a different explanation: the company took the action to prompt Walgreens to respond to overdue maintenance and internet invoices. That explanation is also an attributed position, not an adjudicated conclusion. The two accounts illustrate the operational risk of tying store displays to a vendor’s data and service infrastructure: a disagreement over invoices can affect what shoppers see in-store.

Were the screens removed, and what was the final outcome?
Reports described Walgreens as saying the Cooler Screens doors had been removed. The available accounts do not establish whether removal was complete across all affected stores, how much the dispute ultimately cost either side, or the litigation’s final outcome after the January 2025 reporting. They also do not establish a precise count of doors still operating.
So “$200 million disaster” is best understood as a headline framing around a lawsuit’s claimed damages and a troubled commercial deployment—not evidence of a $200 million judgment or realized loss. The case shows the gap between an in-store media concept and a functioning retail system: advertising potential and product visibility have to be weighed against service reliability, contractual accountability, and the cost of maintaining or removing hardware.
