A blocked nose every morning can have several causes, and the timing alone cannot tell you which one. Rhinitis is common, but allergies, irritants, infection, dry air, medicines and nasal structure can also play a role. Arrange routine medical advice if the problem keeps returning, persists, affects your sleep or is not improving. Seek faster care for breathing difficulty, severe pain, vision changes or other serious symptoms.

Why is my nose blocked when I wake up?

Nasal congestion is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Rhinitis—inflammation or irritation inside the nose—is a common cause. Morning symptoms may reflect something encountered overnight, but waking up congested does not prove that you have an allergy. A clinician can assess the pattern alongside other symptoms, exposures and medicines. See Mayo Clinic’s overview of nasal congestion causes and Healthdirect’s guidance on a blocked nose.

Allergies and overnight exposure

Allergic rhinitis is more plausible when congestion comes with sneezing, an itchy nose or watery eyes, or seems connected to a particular exposure. An allergen encountered at home overnight could make symptoms noticeable on waking, but that pattern is only a clue. The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery’s rhinitis guidance and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s discussion of morning allergies describe patterns readers can discuss with a healthcare professional.

Irritants, dry air and infection

Smoke, dust, perfume, cold air or dry air can irritate the nose. A cold or sinus inflammation may cause congestion along with a runny nose, facial pressure or pain, headache, postnasal drip, cough or fever. CDC’s sinus infection guidance notes that most sinus infections are viral; mucus color on its own does not establish that antibiotics are needed.

Medicines or nasal structure

Some medicines can affect nasal symptoms. A deviated septum, nasal polyps or another narrowing may also contribute, particularly when blockage is persistent or mainly affects one side. Ongoing one-sided symptoms warrant assessment rather than an assumption that the cause is allergy.

What to note before seeking care

When should I see a doctor for a blocked nose?

Arrange routine care for recurring or persistent symptoms

Book a routine appointment if congestion is frequent or persistent, affects sleep, is not getting better or has no clear explanation. A clinician can review your symptoms, exposures, medicines and nasal spray use, then decide whether further assessment—including allergy testing or an ENT evaluation—is appropriate. A blocked nose by itself does not mean that you need a pulmonologist.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for concerning changes

Seek prompt medical advice for difficulty breathing, severe facial pain or headache, fever with significant symptoms, ongoing one-sided discharge, persistent changes in smell, or symptoms that worsen after initially improving. CDC advises medical review for severe symptoms, worsening after improvement, symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement, fever lasting longer than 3–4 days, or multiple sinus infections in a year. These are CDC’s care-seeking signs, not a rule that replaces clinical judgment; see Sinus Infection Basics.

What can help while you work out the cause?

The right approach depends on what is causing the congestion; options for allergy, irritation, infection-related symptoms and structural narrowing are not interchangeable. A clinician or pharmacist can help choose an appropriate option for your age, health conditions and other medicines. Patient guidance includes saline spray or washing and, for allergic rhinitis, allergy medicines or nasal steroid sprays. MedlinePlus describes nasal corticosteroid sprays as the most effective treatment for allergic rhinitis; read its allergic rhinitis guidance and follow product directions.

Use decongestant sprays only as directed

Overusing decongestant nasal sprays can make congestion worse. MedlinePlus advises not using them for more than three days in a row. Check the specific product label, and ask a clinician or pharmacist if the spray is for a child or if you have an underlying condition or take other medicines.

If you rinse your nose, use safe water

Saline rinsing may wash mucus from the nasal passages, but it does not identify or cure the underlying cause. For a rinse, use purchased distilled water as specified in MedlinePlus’s nasal wash instructions, and follow the device instructions and product labeling for preparation and cleaning. Do not use a rinse as a substitute for medical care when symptoms are severe, persistent or worsening.
