Vultr charges for servers by the hour, and shutting one down does not stop the charges: you must destroy it to stop billing. Vultr’s Cloud Compute overview lists a small configuration at $0.005 per hour (1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage), but that example does not verify a universal $2.50 monthly price. Check the live rate for your chosen plan and data-center location before estimating your bill.
How Vultr billing works
Vultr says, “Vultr bills all servers on an hourly basis.” Its documentation specifies a one-hour minimum. For non-GPU server types, including Cloud Compute, Vultr describes a monthly billing ceiling of 672 hours; GPU instances have a ceiling of 730 hours. These are usage charges with monthly caps, not evidence of a fixed-term contract that renews at a set monthly rate. Stopped is not destroyed
A powered-off server still reserves resources, so charges continue while it exists. To stop server billing, Vultr says you must destroy the instance. Destruction can remove data, so copy anything you need elsewhere before deleting it; shutting down is not a substitute for a backup or cancellation.

Vultr’s Cloud Compute overview lists a starting example of $0.005 per hour for a configuration with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage. It is a product-overview example, not a complete price list or proof that the same configuration is offered at that rate in every location. The overview does not establish the title’s “from $2.50/mo” as a current, universal monthly price. Vultr directs customers to its live pricing page for current hourly and monthly rates, and notes that some prices vary by data center. Allow for charges beyond the instance rate
The base instance price may not be your total. Vultr lists bandwidth overage at $0.01 per GB beyond the plan’s allocation. Windows licensing also adds a fee based on the selected compute plan. Which Cloud Compute category fits?
Vultr describes three shared-CPU categories. All are virtual machines, but their stated processor and storage characteristics differ. The published category descriptions do not provide benchmark results, so they are not enough to predict how a particular application will perform.

Vultr describes configurable vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth. Compare the actual plan options for your region on those dimensions, then account for overages and any Windows fee. Vultr Cloud Compute may suit a small site, application, test environment, or database when you want a configurable virtual machine and can choose resources to match demand. The shared-CPU options Vultr describes are particularly positioned for bursty workloads. Your decision should turn on whether the selected instance’s vCPU, memory, storage, bandwidth allocation, and region fit the workload and its budget—not on a headline starting rate alone.

- Estimate the resources your application needs rather than selecting by the lowest advertised rate.
- Check the current price in the data-center location you plan to use; rates may vary by location.
- Include bandwidth beyond the allocation and any Windows licensing in your cost estimate.
- Decide how you will preserve data before destroying an instance you no longer need.
How to estimate your recurring cost
- Open Vultr’s live pricing page and select the intended data-center location and compute category.
- Compare the available configurations’ vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth against your workload requirements.
- Use the displayed hourly or monthly rate for that specific plan and location; do not treat the $0.005/hour overview example as a universal price.
- Add potential bandwidth overage at $0.01 per GB beyond the plan allocation and the plan-dependent Windows licensing fee, if applicable.
- Account for hourly charges while a server exists, including when it is powered off, and destroy it when you want server billing to stop.
