Neither option is universally faster. Use an Empty Profile or --disable-extensions for a quick, controlled diagnosis. Use a saved, lean Profile when you repeatedly switch projects or technology stacks and want only the relevant extensions and settings loaded. Measure the same workload before and after the change; Microsoft publishes no Profiles-versus-disabled-extensions speed benchmark.
The practical answer
Profiles and extension disabling solve different performance problems. A Profile is a saved configuration set: it can include extensions, settings, snippets, tasks, keyboard shortcuts and other customizations. You can switch Profiles manually or associate one with a workspace. Disabling extensions is a control for removing extension activity from the current setup, either temporarily or permanently.
For a one-off slowdown, disabling extensions is the more direct experiment. The fastest broad test is an Empty Profile, which turns off every extension and all modified settings for that session. Because it changes settings as well as extensions, an Empty Profile can show that the problem is outside your normal configuration without proving that an extension caused it. For a recurring workflow, a lean Profile is easier to maintain than repeatedly changing enable/disable states.
| Decision axis | Profiles | Disabling extensions |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Keep separate configurations for projects or technology stacks | Temporarily test or remove extension activity from the current configuration |
| What can change | Extensions, settings, snippets, tasks, keyboard shortcuts and other customizations | One extension, selected extensions, or all installed extensions; scope can be global or workspace-specific |
| Diagnostic value | An Empty Profile tests extensions and modified settings together | Disabling extensions tests whether extensions are involved while retaining more of your existing configuration |
| Best long-term use | Recurring switches between stacks or project types | Short investigations, temporary isolation or removing an extension you no longer need |
| Best next step after a slowdown | Create a dedicated lean Profile after identifying the required tools | Use individual disabling or Extension Bisect to find a culprit |
How VS Code Profiles affect performance
A Profile is configuration, not a speed mode
Creating a Profile does not inherently make Visual Studio Code faster. Its performance depends on what the Profile contains. A Profile with the same extensions and settings as your default configuration should not be expected to produce a different result merely because it has a different name. A Profile can improve responsiveness when it excludes extensions and customizations that a particular workload does not use.

Microsoft presents Profiles as a way to switch between technology stacks. For example, a Profile for one language can contain that language’s formatter, debugger and analysis tools, while another Profile contains a different set. The benefit is controlled configuration: each workload can avoid loading unrelated extension code and settings.
What a Profile can carry
- Installed or enabled extensions associated with the Profile.
- Editor and workbench settings.
- Snippets, tasks and keyboard shortcuts.
- Other customizations that make a workflow repeatable.
- A workspace association, so a project opens with the intended configuration.
This separation also reduces configuration mistakes. A formatter, linter or language service selected for one stack is less likely to interfere with another when the projects use different Profiles.
The remote-development qualification
Profile behavior is not identical in every window. Microsoft notes that extensions are not synchronized to or from remote windows such as SSH sessions, development containers or WSL. Treat a local Profile and a remote window as separate environments when checking which extensions are available and where they execute.
What disabling extensions does
Disable one extension globally
Open the Extensions view, select an extension, open its gear menu and choose the disable command. A global disable prevents that extension from activating in your VS Code installations and workspaces until you enable it again. This is appropriate when an extension is consistently unnecessary or is known to interfere with normal use.
Disable one extension for the current workspace
The same extension menu offers a workspace-specific disable option. Use it when the extension is useful elsewhere but causes trouble, consumes resources or conflicts with tooling in one project. The setting follows that workspace rather than changing your other projects.

Disable all installed extensions
From the Command Palette, run Disable All Installed Extensions. This gives you an immediate extension-free test while preserving your other modified settings. The Extensions view may prompt you to restart the extension host; accept that restart so the test runs without the extensions that were active before the change.
Launch without activating extensions
For a clean process-level test, launch VS Code with the CLI option:
code --disable-extensions
This prevents installed extensions from activating for that launch. It is useful when the normal window is already sluggish or when you want to compare startup behavior from a fresh process.
Why extensions can make VS Code feel slow
The extension host is a separate execution environment
VS Code runs extensions in an extension host. Extension code can affect startup work and user-interface operations, including actions that feel like delayed commands, sluggish navigation or pauses while files are opened. The effect depends on the extension, the project and the operation; Microsoft does not say that every extension slows every workspace.
Lazy activation reduces unnecessary work
Extensions declare Activation Events that tell VS Code when they need to start. VS Code loads them lazily rather than starting every extension for every operation. Lazy activation avoids unnecessary CPU and memory use, but an extension still performs work once its activation event occurs. A language service may become active when a matching file opens; a source-control, test or analysis extension may respond to workspace contents or commands.

Settings can be part of the problem
Modified settings can change scanning, indexing, file watching, rendering or other behavior. That is why an Empty Profile is broader than an extension test: it removes both extensions and modified settings. If performance improves only in an Empty Profile, continue testing instead of attributing the result automatically to an extension.
A reproducible performance test
Use the same machine, project, VS Code build, files and operation in every trial. A changing workload can hide a configuration difference.
- Record the symptom. Write down whether the delay occurs during startup, opening a large folder, typing, saving, searching, debugging, testing or switching files. Note the approximate delay and whether it happens every time.
- Warm up consistently. Start VS Code the same way for each trial. If the slowdown depends on an initial scan or cache, perform the same number of opens and commands before recording the result.
- Run the normal configuration. Repeat the affected operation several times and record the observable result. Do not change project files between trials.
- Run a broad baseline. Open an Empty Profile or launch a separate instance with
--disable-extensions. The Empty Profile also disables modified settings; the CLI option targets extension activation. - Compare the same operation. Use the identical project and steps. A faster result in the baseline is evidence that configuration is involved, not a guaranteed percentage improvement for all projects.
- Narrow the cause. If disabling extensions removes the symptom, re-enable extensions in groups or use Extension Bisect. If only the Empty Profile helps, test modified settings separately as well.
- Keep the smallest useful change. Disable or remove the extension that reproduces the issue, adjust the setting that matters, or create a lean Profile for the workload.
Using an Empty Profile correctly
What the test tells you
Microsoft describes an Empty Profile as a way to see quickly whether an issue comes from an extension, a setting or VS Code core. It is a broad baseline because it disables all extensions and modified settings. If the slowdown remains, your normal extensions and custom settings are less likely to be the cause, although the project, files, operating-system conditions or VS Code itself may still matter.
What it cannot prove
An improvement in an Empty Profile does not identify an extension by itself. Both classes of variables changed at once. To distinguish them, repeat the comparison with extensions disabled while retaining your normal settings, then investigate settings if the results differ.
When to prefer it
- You need a fast yes-or-no baseline before changing individual extensions.
- The normal window is too slow to manage comfortably.
- You suspect a combination of extensions and settings rather than one obvious extension.
- You want to check whether VS Code core behaves normally with a minimal configuration.
Finding a problematic extension
Disable likely candidates individually
Start with extensions that match the symptom: language servers for typing or analysis delays, formatters for save delays, test tools for command pauses, and file or source-control tools for workspace scanning. Disable one candidate, restart the extension host when prompted, and repeat the same operation. Re-enable it before testing the next candidate unless you are intentionally testing a group.

Use Extension Bisect for a large installation
From the Command Palette, run Help: Start Extension Bisect (the exact command label can vary slightly by VS Code release). VS Code disables a subset of extensions, asks you to reproduce the problem and uses your result to select another subset. Each round cuts the candidate set roughly in half. The documented search complexity is O(log N), where N is the number of extensions under consideration; this describes how quickly the culprit is narrowed, not how much faster VS Code becomes.
Continue until the problematic extension is isolated, then verify the finding by enabling and disabling it on the same workload. Extension Bisect is suited to intermittent or non-obvious problems where manual one-at-a-time testing would require many restarts.
Creating a lean Profile for recurring work
- Identify the workload. Name the project or stack clearly, such as a backend service, documentation workspace or data-analysis project.
- Create a Profile. Use the Profiles menu or Command Palette to create a new Profile rather than modifying your default one.
- Install or enable only required extensions. Add the language support, debugger, formatter, test adapter and other tools that the workload actually uses.
- Move relevant settings. Set formatters, linting, file associations and task defaults in the Profile so the project behaves consistently.
- Associate the workspace when appropriate. A workspace association makes the intended Profile easier to select whenever that project opens.
- Measure it. Repeat the same startup and project operations used in your baseline test. Keep the Profile if it is faster or more predictable on your machine, not because Profiles promise a universal gain.
A lean Profile is especially useful when your default installation has accumulated tools for many unrelated stacks. It avoids repeated manual enable/disable work and makes the active extension set visible as part of the project configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Profiles versus disabling: choosing by situation
| Situation | Recommended first move | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Startup suddenly became slow | Launch with --disable-extensions |
It isolates extension activation without requiring the slow window to finish loading all extensions. |
| You do not know whether extensions or settings are responsible | Open an Empty Profile | It disables both categories for a broad baseline. |
| An extension is useful in most projects but not one | Disable it for the current workspace | The change stays local to the affected project. |
| You have many extensions and an intermittent problem | Run Extension Bisect | The halving process narrows candidates in logarithmic time. |
| You switch repeatedly between technology stacks | Create a saved lean Profile for each stack | Each workflow keeps its own extensions and settings without repeated manual toggling. |
| You want to remove a tool permanently | Disable it globally, then uninstall if no longer needed | Global disable stops activation across workspaces while preserving the option to restore it. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a Profile automatically improves speed
A Profile is only as lean as its contents. Copying every extension and setting into a new Profile changes organization, not workload. Remove or disable tools that the target project does not use, then measure.
Calling an Empty Profile an extension-only test
It also disables modified settings. Record that distinction when interpreting the result and perform a separate extension-disabled test if you need attribution.

Comparing different workloads
Opening a small folder in one configuration and a large monorepo in another cannot establish a performance difference. Keep the project, files, commands and warm-up procedure constant.
Forgetting the extension-host restart
Disabling an extension may require restarting the extension host. Without that restart, code from the previous state may remain active and contaminate the comparison.
Expecting a published percentage gain
No comparative speed benchmark establishes that Profiles are a fixed percentage faster than disabled extensions, or vice versa. Results depend on the extension set, settings, project size, machine and operation. Report the result as specific to that setup.

Ignoring remote-window boundaries
When working through SSH, a development container or WSL, check the remote environment separately. Profile extension synchronization does not behave exactly like local synchronization in those windows.
Bottom line
For performance troubleshooting, start with an Empty Profile or code --disable-extensions, then narrow the result with individual disabling or Extension Bisect. For ongoing work, create a Profile that contains only the extensions and settings needed by each project or stack. Neither approach has a universal speed advantage; the reliable answer comes from a controlled before-and-after comparison on your own machine and workspace.
