Use VS Code’s built-in setting or command whenever it already solves the task. Install an extension when you need a clearly defined capability that VS Code does not provide, such as language support, a debugger, or a specialized tool. The deciding factors are capability, scope, setup work, project sharing, and trust—not the assumption that extensions are automatically better.
Built-in settings are part of the editor and can be applied globally or per workspace. Extensions add independently maintained functionality and may require software outside VS Code. The sections below show how to choose, install, share, isolate, and remove them without creating unnecessary configuration.
The short decision rule
Describe the job in one sentence, then search VS Code’s Settings editor and command palette for a built-in way to do it. If the required behavior exists, use that first: it has no additional publisher to evaluate and is configured in the editor’s normal settings system. If a specific capability is absent, look for an extension that explicitly supplies it, read its requirements, and install only what the workflow needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose built-in features for editor, interface, and behavior changes already exposed by VS Code settings or commands.
- Choose an extension for added language support, debugging, or a tool that is not included in the editor.
- Choose workspace settings or recommendations when a project needs a repeatable configuration that teammates can inspect.
- Choose profiles when different projects need different extension sets, settings, or layouts.
What counts as a built-in feature?
Built-in features are shipped with VS Code rather than installed from the Marketplace. The Settings editor covers many parts of the editor, user interface, and functional behavior. You can search settings by name or description, change values in the graphical editor, or edit JSON directly. The official settings guide explains both scopes and the available configuration model at Microsoft’s User and workspace settings documentation.

User settings: your global default
User settings apply globally to your VS Code instances. A preference such as the default font, editor behavior, or a personal accessibility choice follows you across projects opened by that VS Code installation. Use this scope for habits that should remain consistent regardless of the repository.
Workspace settings: the project contract
Workspace settings apply when a particular workspace is open. In a single-folder project they are normally stored in the project’s .vscode/settings.json; a multi-root workspace can carry workspace configuration in its workspace file. Because these files live with the project, they can be reviewed and shared through source control. Use this scope for conventions that contributors need in this repository rather than for personal preferences.
When built-in settings are the better fit
Stay built-in when the task is configuration rather than a missing capability: changing formatting preferences that VS Code already exposes, adjusting the interface, controlling editor behavior, or setting project-specific defaults. A built-in setting is also easier to remove or reset because it is visible in the user or workspace configuration instead of being tied to a separate package and its update cycle.

Extensions are installable packages that contribute functionality to VS Code. They can add language support, debuggers, and tools, and some contribute their own settings. You discover and install them through the Extensions view and the Visual Studio Marketplace; Microsoft’s overview is at Use extensions in Visual Studio Code.
Added capability, not just a different switch
An extension is justified when the editor lacks the capability itself. Examples include support for a language that is not built in, a debugger integration for a runtime, or a project tool that needs a dedicated command and configuration surface. If the extension merely duplicates a setting that already works, its extra maintenance and trust decisions usually outweigh the benefit.

Installation can involve external software
Installing the package is not always the end of setup. An extension may require a compiler, debugger, interpreter, SDK, or command-line tool on your machine, plus a path or project configuration. Read the extension description and README for prerequisites before you install; otherwise the extension can appear enabled while its language server, debugger, or command fails because a dependency is missing.
Compare the choices by the decision that matters
| Decision axis | Built-in settings and features | Extensions |
|---|---|---|
| Capability | Use when the required behavior is already available in VS Code’s settings, commands, or built-in tooling. | Use for a defined missing capability such as language support, a debugger, or an additional tool. |
| Scope | User settings apply globally; workspace settings apply to one project and can be shared through source control. | Install and configure for the workflow that needs the extension; profiles can keep separate extension sets. |
| Setup | Change values in the Settings editor or JSON. | Check documentation and external requirements; another component or configuration may be necessary. |
| Maintenance and control | Settings can be edited or reset, and workspace configuration is visible in the project. | Manage from the Extensions view; extensions can be disabled temporarily or uninstalled, and their details and updates should be reviewed. |
| Trust | You avoid selecting a third-party package for that task. This reduces one decision but is not a guarantee that every built-in workflow is risk-free. | Evaluate the publisher, requested capabilities, requirements, and signature status before installation. |
This comparison is about fit, not a blanket ranking. A well-maintained extension can be essential for a language or debugger, while an extension that duplicates a built-in switch adds complexity without solving a real gap.

A practical selection and installation workflow
Use this sequence whenever you are deciding whether to change a setting or add an extension.
- State the task precisely. Write what you need to happen, such as “debug this runtime,” “provide syntax and diagnostics for this language,” or “change how the editor displays files.” Precise wording prevents installing a broad package for a narrow problem.
- Search built-in controls first. Open the Settings editor, search for the behavior, and inspect relevant commands. Decide whether the change belongs in User settings or Workspace settings. If a built-in option meets the requirement, stop there.
- Search the Extensions view only for a missing capability. Open Extensions, search the language, debugger, or tool name, and inspect each candidate’s publisher, description, settings, README, and stated requirements. Marketplace information is documented by Microsoft at Extension Marketplace.
- Check dependencies before clicking Install. Confirm the required compiler, debugger, runtime, SDK, or command-line utility is available for your operating system and project. Record any required path or configuration change so another contributor can reproduce it.
- Install and verify the smallest useful configuration. After installation, open the target project and perform the task that motivated the extension. Confirm that diagnostics, commands, or debugging work before adding optional companion packages.
- Decide how the project should communicate the requirement. For a shared project, add a recommendation rather than silently expecting every contributor to know about the extension. For a personal experiment, keep it in your profile or user environment.
- Reassess after use. If the extension does not provide the expected capability, disable it temporarily, inspect its output and requirements, or uninstall it. Do not leave an unused package enabled merely because it is installed.
Sharing project requirements without forcing an install
A project can tell contributors which extensions are useful through workspace extension recommendations. Recommendations are listed in .vscode/extensions.json for a folder workspace or in a multi-root workspace configuration. When someone opens the project, VS Code can prompt them to consider installing the listed extensions.
A recommendation is communication, not enforcement. Each contributor can review the publisher, permissions, requirements, and signature status and then choose whether to install. This distinction is important for teams that support different operating systems, use alternative tools, or have policies limiting third-party software. Keep the recommendation focused on capabilities the project genuinely needs; a long list makes the signal less useful.

What to put in workspace settings
Use workspace settings for project behavior that VS Code already supports: formatting preferences, editor conventions, or other repository-specific defaults. Commit the relevant configuration so changes are reviewable. Keep personal paths, credentials, and machine-specific preferences in User settings instead of publishing them in the repository.
Profiles: separate workflows cleanly
Profiles package settings, extensions, and editor layout for a workflow. They are useful when one installation of VS Code serves unrelated stacks—for example, a web project with one language toolchain and a systems project with another. Microsoft’s profile documentation is available at Profiles in Visual Studio Code.
When to create a profile
Create a profile when changing projects repeatedly would otherwise mean enabling and disabling many extensions or changing the same settings by hand. Give the profile a purpose, such as a particular language stack or role, and keep only the extensions and settings that support it. A profile separates your personal environment; it does not replace workspace settings that the project must share.
Use an Empty Profile to isolate a problem
An Empty Profile disables extensions and modified settings. Open the profile controls, select the Empty Profile, and reproduce the problem. If the issue disappears, re-enable extensions or settings in groups until the conflict is identified. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent requirement to work without extensions.
Command-line isolation
For a quick test, launch VS Code with code --disable-extensions. The command-line interface documentation describes this and other launch options at Command Line Interface (CLI). Compare the same folder and action with extensions disabled, then return to your normal profile once you know whether an extension is involved.

Trust, publisher checks, and signature warnings
Marketplace protections and signature verification provide useful safeguards, but they do not remove the need for review. Before installing, check the publisher identity, extension description, README, update activity shown in the Marketplace, requested capabilities, and external requirements. VS Code advises caution when it cannot verify an extension signature. Treat an unverifiable-signature warning as a reason to investigate the publisher and provenance rather than as a prompt to install immediately.
For a team, document why an extension is recommended and who maintains it. Avoid copying an extension into a project or distributing an unreviewed package simply to make setup appear automatic. A workspace recommendation lets each user make an informed decision while still exposing the project’s expected tooling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common use cases and the right choice
Changing editor behavior or appearance
Start with built-in settings. Search for the behavior in Settings and decide whether it is a User preference or a Workspace convention. Installing an extension for a setting that already exists creates another package to update and another publisher to trust without adding capability.
Adding support for a programming language
Use an extension when the language support is not included in VS Code. Confirm what the extension actually provides—syntax, diagnostics, navigation, formatting, debugging, or only some of these—and check whether it needs a compiler, language server, SDK, or command-line tool. Recommend it in the project when contributors need consistent support, but let them choose whether to install.
Debugging a runtime or device
An extension is appropriate when the required debugger integration is missing. Read the setup instructions for the debugger and runtime, configure launch settings as required, and test a real breakpoint. If the debugger executable is not installed or is not on the expected path, installing the extension alone will not make debugging work.

Adding a specialized development tool
Use an extension for a tool that needs its own commands, diagnostics, or project integration. Limit installation to the profile or workspace that needs it, and verify whether a separate command-line component must be installed. If the tool is used by every contributor, provide a workspace recommendation and clear prerequisites.
Keeping several technology stacks apart
Use profiles for distinct extension sets and layouts, then use workspace settings for each repository’s shared conventions. This combination prevents a project-specific extension from changing every project while still making the repository’s intended behavior visible to collaborators.
Investigating a slow, broken, or conflicting workflow
First reproduce the issue with an Empty Profile or with code --disable-extensions. If the problem remains, inspect built-in settings and workspace configuration. If it disappears, re-enable extensions systematically, starting with the one most closely related to the failing language or tool. Disable or uninstall the extension that causes the conflict, then check whether the project can use a built-in setting or a different supported configuration.

Temporarily disable an extension
Open the Extensions view, find the installed extension, open its management menu, and choose the disable command. VS Code provides controls to disable an extension for the current workspace or more broadly, depending on the option shown. Use a temporary disable when you are testing a conflict or working in a project where the extension is irrelevant; disabling preserves the installation for later.
Uninstall an extension
From the same extension management controls, choose Uninstall when the package is no longer needed. Remove related project recommendations or configuration if the project has moved to another tool. If an extension required an external compiler, debugger, or command-line utility, decide separately whether that component is still used; uninstalling the VS Code package does not necessarily remove software installed outside the editor.
Review changes after updates
Inspect extension details and release information when a previously working workflow changes. Recheck dependencies and project settings before assuming the built-in editor is at fault. Keeping extensions limited to the profiles and workspaces that need them reduces the number of updates that can affect an unrelated project.
A compact decision checklist
- Can a searchable VS Code setting or command perform the task?
- Does the task require language support, a debugger, or a tool that is genuinely absent?
- Which scope is correct: User settings, Workspace settings, or a profile?
- Will teammates need the capability, and should the project list a recommendation in
.vscode/extensions.json? - Does the extension require a compiler, debugger, SDK, runtime, or command-line tool?
- Have you reviewed the publisher, documentation, requirements, and signature status?
- Can you reproduce the result with a minimal configuration and isolate failures with an Empty Profile or
--disable-extensions? - What is the removal plan if the extension stops helping?
Bottom line
Built-in features are the default for configuration and editor behavior because they already provide the capability with a clear User or Workspace scope. Extensions earn their place when they add a specific language, debugger, or tool that VS Code does not include. Check dependencies and trust signals before installing, communicate shared needs with recommendations rather than forced packages, and use profiles or temporary disabling to keep workflows separate and troubleshoot conflicts.
