There is no universal winner among VS Code, Cursor, and Devin Desktop. VS Code is the sensible starting point if you want a familiar, configurable editor; Cursor is a strong fit if you want an agent-centered workspace with local and cloud workflows; Devin Desktop is aimed at developers who want to manage agents from a command center without giving up a full IDE. The right choice depends on the work you do and how much you want agents to manage it.

The title’s month-long framing calls for a personal verdict, but the available evidence does not establish a month of hands-on testing of these three products. This comparison instead separates vendor-described features from independent evidence and gives you a practical way to choose for your own workflow.

What actually distinguishes the three tools?

These products are no longer best understood as three conventional code editors with different AI add-ons. Cursor and Devin Desktop both emphasize agent workflows, while VS Code remains a flexible editor and development environment whose capabilities depend on the extensions, settings, and AI services each person chooses.

Tool What it is positioned to do Most relevant distinction
Visual Studio Code A code editor and development environment, now also presented around AI and multi-agent development. Familiar baseline with a setup that varies by user.
Cursor A VS Code-derived product with an agent-centered workspace as well as the option to return to the Cursor IDE. Combines agent coordination with local and cloud work and a path back to conventional IDE editing.
Devin Desktop The new name for Windsurf, according to its official FAQ; it retains a full IDE while adding an agent command center. Organizes agent management around a command center, including Spaces and a Kanban view.

Cursor says it began as a VS Code fork, rather than an extension, so it could shape its own interface. Its April 2, 2026 announcement describes Cursor 3 as an agent-centered workspace with multi-repository layout, parallel-agent visibility, and local/cloud handoffs. Devin’s product page describes a similar shift toward managing agents, while retaining IDE features such as syntax highlighting, autocomplete, and debugging tools. These are vendor descriptions of capabilities, not independent findings about how reliably either product completes work.

Which coding editor should you use: VS Code, Cursor, or Devin Desktop?

Choose VS Code if your setup already works

VS Code is the least disruptive choice when your editor setup, extensions, keyboard habits, and development environment are already serving you well. The official site now presents it as supporting AI and multi-agent development, but that does not mean every installation includes the same tools: your experience depends on the extensions, settings, and services you enable.

It is also a reasonable choice if you want to decide which capabilities to add rather than move into an editor organized around one product’s agent workflow. Check that the extensions and services you rely on are available and configured for your projects before changing editors.

Choose Cursor if agent coordination is central to your day

Cursor is worth considering if you routinely split work across repositories or want to supervise local and cloud agents in one workspace. Cursor says its cloud agents can produce demos and screenshots, and describes moving a cloud session local for editing and testing—or sending local work to the cloud to continue while you are away. Cursor 3 also offers a return to the Cursor IDE, with file and definition views supported by language-server functionality, an integrated browser, and agent plugins.

That combination makes Cursor a plausible fit when you want to delegate some work but still inspect and test it in an IDE. The announcement describes available product features; it does not establish that a particular agent will finish your task correctly or save you time.

Choose Devin Desktop if you want an agent command center plus an IDE

Devin Desktop is the current product name for Windsurf, according to the official FAQ. The company describes it as building on Windsurf’s IDE foundation, adding an agent command center, Spaces, a Kanban view, and multi-agent management while retaining the full IDE. Its page also lists integrations and extensions, including Slack and Linear MCP servers, ESLint and Prettier, and language servers such as rust-analyzer and gopls. Confirm the documentation and plan terms for any integration you need; the product page does not establish that every listed item is included in every plan.

Consider it if you want to manage multiple agents from a centralized view without leaving an IDE environment. The vendor’s description does not by itself prove that its command center is more effective than Cursor’s for your particular work.

Compare them against the work you actually do

Before switching, evaluate the same representative tasks in each setup. Keep the repository, task description, and acceptance criteria as consistent as practical, then record what you had to intervene in. A task that looks easy in a demo may be difficult in a real project because of its tests, conventions, dependencies, or incomplete instructions.

Decision axis What to check Why it matters
Editor feel and migration Can you retain the extensions, keybindings, and everyday editing habits you depend on? A more capable agent is not automatically worth the friction of a disrupted setup.
Agent management Can you see what each agent is doing, track parallel tasks, and review the right repository and changes? Agent visibility matters more as work spreads across tasks or repositories.
Local and cloud workflow Where does work run? Can it keep going when you are away, and can you bring it back to edit and test locally? Handoffs and execution location shape how easily you can supervise work.
Review and debugging Can you inspect the diff, reproduce a change, run tests, and understand a failure before accepting the work? Generated code still needs human review and project-specific validation.
Task type Test representative fixes, features, and documentation separately. Evidence indicates that agent outcomes vary by task category.
Cost at your usage Compare current included usage, limits, and any additional charges against how much you expect to use the tools. A monthly list price alone does not establish the total cost of a given workload.

What independent evidence says about coding-agent results

A peer-reviewed 2026 MSR study analyzed 7,156 pull requests from five coding agents and found that acceptance differed by task type. Across the dataset, reported acceptance was 82.1% for documentation tasks and 66.1% for new features. In the paper’s task-stratified results, Claude Code had the highest listed acceptance for documentation (92.3%) and features (72.6%), while Cursor led the listed tools for fixes (80.4%). The authors’ conclusion is that no one agent performs best across all task types. Read the study and its methodology.

Logitech K270 Full Size Wireless Keyboard for Windows - Black
  • All-day Comfort: This USB keyboard creates a comfortable and familiar typing experience thanks to the deep-profile keys and standard full-size layout with all F-keys, number pad and arrow keys
  • Built to Last: The spill-proof (2) design and durable print characters keep you on track for years to come despite any on-the-job mishaps; it’s a reliable partner for your desk at home, or at work
  • Long-lasting Battery Life: A 24-month battery life (4) means you can go for 2 years without the hassle of changing batteries of your wireless full-size keyboard
  • Simply plug the USB receiver into a USB port on your desktop, laptop or netbook computer and start using the keyboard right away without any software installation
  • Simply Wireless: Forget about drop-outs and delays thanks to a strong, reliable wireless connection with up to 33 ft range (5); K270 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later

Those figures describe the paper’s dataset and comparisons; they are not results from a controlled month-long comparison of VS Code, Cursor, and Devin Desktop, and they do not show that an editor causes an individual developer to achieve a particular outcome. Use the findings to separate your own trial tasks by type, not to declare a winner from a single acceptance percentage.

How to run a fair trial before committing

  1. Pick three real tasks. Use one fix, one feature, and one documentation change representative of work you actually do. Write down what counts as done, including relevant tests or review criteria.
  2. Use the same starting conditions. Where practical, give each tool the same repository, task brief, and access to project context. Note any setup or permission differences that affect what the tool can do.
  3. Track human effort, not just whether code appeared. Record setup time, clarifying prompts, corrections, test failures, time spent reviewing, and whether you could explain the final change.
  4. Try the workflow you expect to use. If parallel agents or cloud continuation matter, test those features and the return handoff; if you mostly edit locally, prioritize IDE feel and debugging.
  5. Decide using your own usage and costs. Check current entitlements, usage limits, and overage or billing terms on the official product pages before subscribing or migrating.

What Devin Desktop costs, and why list prices are not enough

On Devin Desktop’s official pricing page as accessed October 7, 2026, the listed prices were Free at $0, Pro at $20 per month, Max at $200 per month, and Teams at $80 per month plus $40 per month per full seat; Enterprise was listed as contact sales. These are observed listed prices, not a complete comparison of total cost: the captured information does not establish included usage or billing terms for a like-for-like comparison with VS Code or Cursor. Verify the current page and plan details before making a purchase decision.

Verdict: pick the workflow, not the supposed universal winner

For the developer who already has a productive VS Code setup, start by keeping it and assessing whether its available AI tools meet the need. If agent coordination across local and cloud work is the deciding factor, evaluate Cursor’s workspace and handoffs. If a centralized command view alongside a full IDE is more appealing, evaluate Devin Desktop. In all three cases, judge the choice by representative tasks, review effort, and your actual plan usage—not by a claim that one tool wins for every developer.
