AI coding agents can move coding work out of the editor, but that does not make the editor obsolete—or remove the need to inspect and test changes. The practical shift is from writing every line yourself to delegating bounded tasks, reviewing what comes back, and deciding where that loop works best for you.
What changes when an AI agent leads the coding loop?
In an editor-centered workflow, you navigate files, make changes, run the application, and use an assistant as one part of that work. With an agent-centered workflow, you describe a task and let an agent explore the repository, propose or make edits, and run development tools. Your role shifts toward defining the task, supplying context, reviewing the diff, and checking the result.
That shift is about where and how you work, not proof that a developer can safely stop opening an editor. An agent can produce a patch; a person still needs to decide whether it fits the codebase and behaves correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVS Code still supports an agent-led workflow
Leaving VS Code is not a prerequisite for using coding agents. Microsoft’s VS Code documentation describes keeping an agent conversation beside the editor, inspecting edits as they happen, and using the debugger, terminal, and tests in the same workflow. It also covers assigning tasks and following multiple agent sessions. The guide names Copilot, Anthropic Claude, and OpenAI Codex as agent-harness examples; exact availability can depend on extensions, accounts, and product configuration.

This arrangement keeps familiar editor navigation and review close to the agent’s work. It can suit tasks where seeing surrounding code, stepping through a failure, or making a precise manual adjustment is central.
What work looks like outside the editor
Terminal-based repository work
OpenAI’s Codex CLI documentation describes a terminal loop: the agent explores a repository, plans a change, edits files, runs local development tools, and presents commands and diffs for review. The documentation also describes permission controls, scripting and CI use, local review, and handing tasks to cloud sessions. This can make the terminal the main place to delegate and supervise work, while leaving an editor available when you want one.

Moving between local, cloud, and desktop sessions
OpenAI’s February 2026 Codex app announcement describes moving among CLI, web, IDE extension, and a dedicated app. It also describes reviewing an agent’s changes before opening them in an editor for manual work. These interfaces change where a task is started and monitored; they do not, by themselves, establish that the result is correct or ready to merge.
Choose the interface by the job, not by a replacement story
The useful comparison is not simply “editor versus AI.” Consider where the work happens, what repository context the agent can use, whether edits are local or delegated, what permissions or approvals apply, and how you will review and test the result.

- Stay in the editor when you want conversation, code context, debugging, and tests close together.
- Use a terminal workflow when repository exploration, local tools, scripted work, or command-level control are central.
- Delegate through cloud or desktop sessions when you want work to continue in a separate session and then need to inspect the changes before taking them further.
These are not mutually exclusive habits. A developer can delegate a task through one interface, inspect the diff in another, and return to an editor for debugging or finishing work.
What the available numbers do—and do not—show
Flutter’s Q2 2026 community survey reported VS Code use among 66% of respondents and Claude Code use among 32%. It also reported Android Studio at 40%, Antigravity at 23%, GitHub Copilot at 19%, Cursor at 18%, and Codex at 17%. Respondents could select more than one editor or agent, so these figures are overlapping selections, not exclusive market shares or evidence that users migrated from VS Code to an agent.

Anthropic’s December 2025 report examined its own engineers and researchers: 132 people completed a survey and 53 took part in in-depth interviews, with data collection in August 2025. In that internal survey, employees reported using Claude for 59% of their work on average and a self-reported average productivity gain of 50%. The report also said 55% used Claude daily for debugging, 42% for code understanding, and 37% for implementing features. These are employee reports from an AI company’s workforce, not independent measurements of productivity across developers. The report itself notes that productivity is difficult to measure and that self-reporting can be biased. Its internal usage data classified 8.6% of Claude Code tasks as “papercut fixes”; that figure should not be generalized to other teams or tools.

Its revised paper reported acceptance rates of 82.1% for documentation tasks and 66.1% for new-feature tasks. Results varied by task and agent, and no evaluated agent led in every category. Pull-request acceptance in that sample is a bounded measure, not a universal code-quality score or a prediction of how an agent will perform in a particular repository.

Keep review and recovery in the workflow
VS Code’s guidance puts inspection, debugging, and testing alongside agent work. OpenAI’s Codex CLI instructions recommend Git checkpoints around tasks. Together, these practices make delegation easier to supervise and mistakes easier to undo.
- Start with a bounded task. State the intended change and relevant constraints rather than handing over an open-ended rewrite.
- Keep a recoverable baseline. Use a Git checkpoint before substantial agent edits so you can compare or revert changes.
- Inspect the diff. Check which files changed, whether the implementation matches the request, and whether unrelated edits appeared.
- Run the project’s checks. Use the tests, debugger, or other local tools that apply to the change; an agent’s report that it ran a command is not a substitute for evaluating the result.
- Decide what to keep. Revise, revert, or accept the changes based on the code and observed behavior, not on the interface used to produce them.
A workflow can rely heavily on agents without becoming hands-off. The meaningful change is that developers spend more effort specifying, supervising, and validating work—and choose an interface that makes those responsibilities manageable.
