Fix VRM dance clipping in order: inspect the video-based pose estimate, verify the retargeted bone map and alignment, then correct any remaining character-specific mesh intersections. A bad estimate cannot be repaired by retarget settings, and a motion that looks valid on one body may still pass through another avatar’s clothing or proportions. There is no documented universal button that automatically fixes all three.

1. Check the estimated motion before retargeting

Review the source animation on its own, before judging it on the VRM character. Find the exact frames where a limb clips, then check whether the performer is fully in frame and whether the relevant joints are visible. Limbs that cross the body, turn away from the camera, or leave the image can be harder to track. Rokoko notes that occlusion reduces tracking quality in its Vision 3.0 documentation.

If the estimate already has a misplaced arm, leg, or hand, changing the VRM mesh will not restore the missing visual evidence. For a new recording, use full-body framing and keep limbs unobstructed where possible. Those steps follow from the documented visibility limitation; they do not guarantee a perfect reconstruction.

Check fingers separately

Rokoko states that Vision 3.0 does not track finger motion. An arm pose can therefore look plausible while the hand lacks articulated finger movement. The manufacturer identifies Smartgloves II as a finger-capture option for future recordings, but gloves cannot recover finger data from a video that has already been processed. See the Vision 3.0 documentation and Smartgloves II information.

2. Verify the retargeting map, scale, and pose

Once the source motion is plausible, check how its armature maps to the VRM character’s armature. In Rokoko’s Blender workflow, import the animated source, select both armatures, build the bone list, and review each assignment. Correct missing or mismatched bones instead of assuming automatic matching is accurate. The Rokoko Blender retargeting guide also emphasizes that the armatures need to be in the same pose for correct retargeting.

  1. Inspect bone assignments. Confirm that the source’s limbs map to the corresponding target bones, especially where an arm or leg suddenly bends or rotates incorrectly.
  2. Check scale. Use Auto Scale only if needed; otherwise resize manually and inspect the result.
  3. Choose a suitable retarget pose. Confirm the source and target armatures’ pose alignment before evaluating the retarget.
  4. Recheck the problem frames. If feet float or move above the ground, or hips remain fixed, the guide suggests testing Auto Scale off or using the Current pose option. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.

3. Distinguish foot-floor problems from body clipping

A foot passing through the floor, drifting, or failing to plant is different from a thigh intersecting a skirt or a hand passing through the torso. Rokoko’s locomotion cleanup controls include editable left- and right-foot lock keys, knee-pop smoothing, and toe-bend options. Its Drift Fix filter adjusts root drift so the start and end locations match when the performer returns to the same physical position. The locomotion filter guide warns that filters are experimental and their effects vary by project.

Use those controls for the specific contact or drift artifacts they address. They are not general mesh-intersection solvers, so they should not be expected to fix a hand passing through a torso or clothing intersecting a leg.

4. Correct remaining intersections for the specific avatar

When the source estimate and retarget are plausible, inspect the VRM character at the offending frames. A remaining intersection may result from a mismatched bone, an incompatible rest pose or scale, or motion that works on the source performer but conflicts with this avatar’s proportions, clothing, or accessories.

For a pose or mapping problem, return to the retarget setup. If the motion is sound but intersects the target’s geometry, correction is usually specific to that character: edit the affected motion curves or poses, or revisit the rig or mesh. The cited documentation does not establish a standardized automatic VRM clipping repair, so the exact fix depends on the avatar and the affected frames.

5. Confirm the VRM animation delivery path

VRM Animation is a glTF-based humanoid animation format intended to let the same animation file work across VRM models. That format-level intent does not guarantee identical behavior in every application: VRM’s documentation warns that implementations of the draft may differ from the officially released specification. Check the importer, exporter, runtime, and VRM Animation version supported by the target application before delivery. See the VRM Animation documentation.

If you use UniVRM, its setup guide describes importing a VRM as a prefab and configuring and exporting the model, including normalization with Pose Freeze. That workflow may be relevant when the model itself needs normalization; the guide does not claim Pose Freeze repairs retargeting mistakes or mesh clipping.
