VR gaming spans standalone headsets, PC VR and PlayStation VR2, and a game that works on one platform may not work on another. Start by matching a headset to the hardware you own, then check each game’s supported platform and whether it runs natively or needs a PC connection.
Do you need a PC for VR gaming?
No—not for standalone headsets such as Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Meta says its VR devices work without a PC, and their games run on the headset. If you want to play PC VR titles, supported Quest devices can connect to a computer through Quest Link or Air Link. Link is the wired route; Air Link is wireless. The game and headset must support the route you choose.
Meta’s quick start explains standalone use. Its device comparison lists Link cable and Air Link support for PC VR. Meta’s Unity development guidance recommends a USB-C cable with throughput of at least 5 GB/s for development; that is not a universal consumer cable requirement.

How do Quest 3 and Quest 3S compare?
Both are all-in-one headsets with LCD panels, a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and 8 GB of memory, according to Meta’s comparison page, updated September 18, 2026. Their display resolution and horizontal field of view differ:

These are manufacturer specifications, not a hands-on assessment of comfort, image quality or tracking. Fit and perceived clarity can vary between players; the numbers alone cannot tell you which headset will feel better. Meta’s full comparison also covers vertical field of view and IPD adjustment.
Can you use PlayStation VR2 for PC VR?
Yes. Sony documents a Windows PC route that uses the PS VR2 PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 connection, USB, the PlayStation VR2 software and SteamVR. Sony specifies Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and lists minimum PC requirements; consult its full compatibility details before buying an adapter or setting up a PC.

Sony says performance varies by PC setup and recommends stronger graphics hardware for best performance. PC use has feature limitations compared with PS5 use, and compatibility with the headset does not mean every SteamVR game will work identically. Sony’s adapter announcement and setup requirements were published June 3, 2024; the post said the adapter would be available starting August 7, 2024. Check local availability and the current requirements before purchasing.
How should you check whether a VR game will work?
Look at the game’s store listing or the publisher’s current compatibility information before buying. Confirm the headset or platform, storefront and play mode—not just whether the game is described as “VR.” A Quest-native game, a SteamVR title streamed from a PC and a PS VR2 game are different compatibility cases.

- Quest: Confirm the game supports the specific Quest headset and runs natively if you do not intend to use a PC.
- SteamVR: Check the game’s headset and PC requirements. A Quest or PS VR2 user needs the appropriate PC connection and software as well as a compatible computer.
- PlayStation VR2: Verify that the game supports PS VR2 on PS5, or check specifically for PC/SteamVR support if you plan to use Sony’s PC adapter. Do not assume support transfers between platforms.
Release calendars can help track new games, but platform labels still matter. For example, UploadVR’s July 2026 release roundup groups releases across Quest, PC VR, PS VR2 and other XR platforms. It is a dated roundup, not a current release calendar.

A useful review separates published specifications from what the reviewer actually tested. Specs can narrow the choices, but they do not establish real-world comfort, clarity or ease of setup. A clear review should identify its test conditions and explain the trade-offs that matter to the reader.

- Setup and platform: State whether the headset works standalone, requires a console or PC, or supports both standalone and PC streaming. Name the tested connection and storefront.
- Image and fit: Discuss clarity, field of view, fit, comfort during longer sessions and whether glasses or fit adjustments affect the experience. Manufacturer resolution and refresh-rate figures are useful context, not substitutes for testing.
- Tracking and controls: Describe tracking reliability and the input system used, based on actual play.
- Mixed reality: Assess passthrough only if it is relevant to the headset and the review includes hands-on testing.
- Games and value: Name the tested games and their platforms. Compare the headset’s strengths with its setup demands and library rather than treating one platform’s game catalogue as universal.

What to check before buying or setting up
- Choose the platform first. Decide whether you want standalone play, PC VR, PS5 VR or a combination. Check the games you want against that platform.
- Check the hardware path. For standalone play, confirm the headset supports the game natively. For PC VR, verify headset support, PC requirements, connection method and required software.
- Compare fit as well as specifications. Use resolution, refresh rate and field of view as reference points, then look for credible hands-on comfort and image-quality assessments.
- Confirm the exact setup requirements. For PS VR2 on PC, check Sony’s current adapter, DisplayPort, operating-system, hardware and software requirements. For Quest PC VR, choose between Link and Air Link based on your equipment and preference.
