A VPN can stop your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator from seeing which individual sites you open, and it makes the site you visit see the VPN server’s IP address instead of yours. It does not make adult-site viewing 100% anonymous. A signed-in account, cookies, and browser or device signals can still identify you, and the VPN company itself becomes a party you have to trust. This article explains where the protection stops, what no-logs audits do and do not prove, and which providers have published audit material. It does not rank them as the best, because the evidence gathered here does not measure speed, adult-site access, price, or app quality.
What a VPN actually changes
A VPN app sends your device’s traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server run by the provider. Two things change as a result:
- Your network sees a VPN connection instead of each destination. Your home network, workplace, or mobile carrier can still see that a VPN connection exists and roughly how much data moves through it, but not the individual sites inside the tunnel.
- The website sees the VPN exit IP address. The address shown to the site belongs to the VPN server you connect to, not to your home connection.
That is the full extent of the change. A privacy policy from a VPN provider not covered by the audits below, PlanckVPN, states the point plainly: “A VPN moves the point at which your traffic becomes visible; it does not make you anonymous.”

| Party | Without a VPN | With a VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Your internet provider or Wi-Fi operator | Usually sees the domain names you visit | Sees a connection to the VPN server and traffic volume, not the individual sites inside the tunnel |
| The adult site | Sees your home or mobile IP address | Sees the VPN exit IP address, plus anything that identifies you directly |
| The VPN provider | Not involved | Can observe traffic it routes; what it keeps depends on its policy and infrastructure |
What still identifies you
- A signed-in account, including a membership, subscription, comment profile, or saved payment method.
- Cookies, local storage, and similar browser data that persist between visits.
- Browser and device signals that can make your setup recognizable even with a different IP address.
- Payment records with your bank or card issuer, which sit entirely outside the VPN.
- The VPN provider’s own records, which depend on what it says it keeps and whether its claims hold.
What “no logs” and audits can and cannot establish
A no-logs policy is the provider’s statement about what it does not keep. Its value depends on three things: what the statement covers, the period it covers, and whether someone outside the company checked it.
- Scope matters. An audit that reviewed server configuration and operations tells you more than one that only read the written policy.
- Dates matter. An audit covers the systems and period named in its report. Later changes to the service are not covered by an older report.
- An audit is evidence, not a guarantee. It does not cover your browser, your accounts, or the site you visit, and it does not make anonymity permanent or universal.
- Jurisdiction is a separate question. The sources cited here do not establish how the legal setting of any provider’s home country affects the data it holds.

Proton VPN
Proton says the security firm Securitum reviewed its server configuration and operations. In its 2026 audit announcement, Proton describes this as its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit. The Securitum statement quoted there reads:
“The technical evidence reviewed during the engagement did not indicate that the examined Proton VPN server infrastructure logs users’ browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata. Securitum also did not identify persistent records that would allow Proton to associate a specific user with activity performed through a reviewed VPN server.”

Note the wording: the review examined the servers it was given, and “did not indicate” is narrower than a claim that nothing is logged anywhere.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s trust center lists a series of security and privacy audits, including a KPMG review of its privacy commitments in June 2025. The company says it does not retain browsing history, destinations, metadata, DNS queries, or VPN-assigned IP addresses, and it publishes counts of transparency requests it receives. These are company statements on its trust center page; the page is the source for the audit list.

DuckDuckGo VPN
DuckDuckGo says Securitum audited its VPN and supporting infrastructure from October 2025 through January 2026. The stated findings are no logging of user activity on egress servers, no user-attributable connection metadata such as DNS traffic, and uniform application of its policy across regions. The findings are DuckDuckGo’s description of the audit.
Private Internet Access
Its provider page says its no-logs policy passed two independent Deloitte audits. The page does not give audit dates or scope, and it is maintained by the provider. Treat the statement as the provider’s claim until you can read the audit report and check what it covered.

NordVPN
TechRadar reported in late 2025 that Deloitte conducted a sixth no-logs assessment, and that the assessment covered several NordVPN services. This is secondhand reporting. It is not the assessment report, so the covered services and the exact scope are as TechRadar described them.

Why the site side matters too
A 2019 preprint by researchers who studied 22,484 pornography websites reported that 93% of the sites in its sample leaked user data to a third party. The same preprint reported that 44.97% of domains in its sample exposed or suggested a specific gender or sexual identity or interest. These figures describe that 2019 sample and method. They are not a current estimate for all adult sites, but they show that tracking on the site is a real exposure that a VPN does not remove.
How to check a VPN before you rely on it
- Read the audit scope and date. Note whether the review covered servers and operations or only written policy, and when it was carried out.
- List what the provider says it keeps. Look for browsing history, DNS queries, connection metadata, and assigned IP addresses, and confirm each one is covered by the stated policy.
- Turn on the kill switch. In the app’s settings, look for an option labeled kill switch or similar that blocks traffic when the VPN connection drops, and enable it. Menu names vary between apps.
- Run a leak test on your own device. Connect to the VPN, open a public IP or DNS leak test page, and confirm the reported address and DNS resolver belong to the VPN. Repeat after disconnecting to see your normal address.
- Check that the sites you use load from the server country you choose. Availability varies by country, so test from the location you actually use.
- Compare price and renewal terms on the provider’s own pricing page before paying, and note the renewal rate, not only the introductory one.
- Reduce identifying signals on the site. Sign out of accounts you do not need on adult sites, use a separate browser profile, and block third-party trackers in your browser or a content blocker.
Steps 1 and 2 tell you what the provider claims and what has been checked. Steps 3 and 4 tell you whether the app behaves as claimed on your device. Steps 5 and 6 cover the practical questions this article does not answer for you.
