AnchorFree, the company behind Hotspot Shield, announced a $295 million funding round on September 5, 2018. WndrCo led the investment, joined by Accel Partners, 8VC, SignalFire, Green Bay Ventures and other investors.
What AnchorFree announced
TechCrunch reported on September 5, 2018, that AnchorFree had raised $295 million. Its report described Hotspot Shield as AnchorFree’s flagship VPN app and named WndrCo as the lead investor, with Accel Partners, 8VC, SignalFire, Green Bay Ventures and others participating. TechCrunch’s September 5 report quoted CEO David Gorodyansky saying WndrCo brought experience launching and scaling global technology products.
SecurityWeek reported the next day that the financing brought AnchorFree’s total funding to nearly $358 million. That was the publication’s qualified figure, not an exact cumulative total. SecurityWeek’s September 6 report also said the company planned to put the new funds toward product development, market expansion and mergers and acquisitions.

What the company said about Hotspot Shield’s reach
Contemporaneous coverage attributed large audience figures to AnchorFree, but the wording varied: reports described 650 million downloads or users across 190 countries. SecurityWeek and the New York Times report republished by WRAL also cited 250,000 new downloads per day. These are company figures reported in 2018, not audited counts or current usage statistics. The New York Times report carried by WRAL described Hotspot Shield’s freemium model, under which some users paid for additional features.

What the financing does—and does not—tell you
The announcement documents the size and participants of a historical funding round, along with AnchorFree’s stated intended uses for the money. The cited coverage does not establish how the funds were ultimately spent. Nor does reporting from 2018 establish AnchorFree’s current corporate status, who operates Hotspot Shield today, or the service’s present terms.
The news is also not evidence that a VPN prevents every kind of security problem. A VPN can route network traffic through its provider, but that alone does not make all online activity private or protect against every security incident. The New York Times report carried by WRAL discussed these limits alongside broad privacy marketing claims.
