Voyager 23.10 combines GNOME 45 and Xfce 4.18 in a single Ubuntu-based Linux release, adding a custom visual theme and a collection of utilities. It is now a historical release, not a supported daily-driver recommendation: Ubuntu 23.10 reached end of life on July 11, 2024, and no longer receives package or security updates.
What is Voyager 23.10?
Voyager 23.10 is a Linux distribution built on Ubuntu 23.10, also known as Mantic Minotaur. The Voyager project describes it as a unified GNOME-and-Xfce system, with Linux kernel 6.5, GNOME 45 and Xfce 4.18. The release was issued in 2023 as an interim version with a planned nine-month update period. Voyager project release page
The defining idea is that one installation offers distinct GNOME and Xfce desktop sessions. Voyager says most applications associated with one environment are hidden from the other, aiming to keep each session visually and practically separate. The project’s positioning also mentions PC and tablet use; that is a design claim, not an independently verified performance or usability result.

What does Voyager add beyond its desktop environments?
Visual customization
The release page describes a refreshed Voyager theme, blue GNOME Shell styling and icons, a more organized application menu, and selected GNOME extensions. These choices give the distribution a more curated appearance than an unmodified desktop, though preferences about themes and layout are subjective.

Box Voyager utilities
Voyager includes a set of utilities grouped under the name “Box Voyager.” The project lists Backup One Click, Conky Control, GNOME Shell effects, repair options, an Ubuntu switch option, Wine development tools and Steam gaming support. Their presence describes the supplied toolset; it does not establish independent reliability, security, or gaming-performance results.
Applications
The project’s listed software includes Firefox, LibreWolf, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, GIMP, Foliate and media players, alongside other desktop utilities. The release page is the source for this Voyager-specific selection; applications found in stock Ubuntu should not automatically be assumed to be present or configured identically here.

How is it different from regular Ubuntu 23.10?
Both products share the Ubuntu 23.10 base, but Voyager’s distinct proposition is pairing GNOME and Xfce with its own theme, utilities and selected software. Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 itself used GNOME 45 and included Tiling Assistant, a Flutter-built App Center for deb and snap packages, and a separate firmware updater. Those are Ubuntu platform details; they should not be treated as a guarantee that Voyager retains every stock Ubuntu application or default.

Is Voyager 23.10 still supported?
No. Ubuntu’s Release Team confirmed that Ubuntu 23.10 became unsupported on July 11, 2024. After that date, package updates were no longer accepted and Ubuntu Security Notices no longer covered 23.10 with information or updated packages. Ubuntu’s release history dates the release to October 12, 2023, and identifies Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as the announced supported upgrade path. Because Voyager 23.10 is based on that unsupported Ubuntu release, do not choose it for a system that needs ongoing security updates. If you are evaluating Voyager now, consult the project’s current releases and Ubuntu’s supported-release guidance rather than assuming this older version remains maintained.

Who might find Voyager 23.10 useful?
As a historical release, it can be relevant to readers studying Voyager’s approach to combining desktop environments or reviewing a past Linux installation. Its two-session setup and custom utilities are the main points of distinction. The available release information does not establish comparative speed, hardware compatibility, security quality, or user preference, so it cannot support a claim that Voyager is faster or better than stock Ubuntu.
