Yes—a research team demonstrated that deliberately introduced voltage noise at a wireless charger’s power supply can manipulate the charger without modifying the charger itself. The researchers reported three types of outcome, including voice-command injection, charging-related overheating or damage, and bypassing foreign-object detection. Their tests covered nine commercial chargers; they do not show that all Qi chargers are vulnerable or estimate how common the weakness is.
What VoltSchemer is—and what it is not
VoltSchemer is an experimental attack on commercial wireless chargers, described in the 2024 USENIX Security paper “VoltSchemer: Use Voltage Noise to Manipulate Your Wireless Charger”. Authors Zihao Zhan, Yirui Yang, Haoqi Shan, Hanqiu Wang, Yier Jin, and Shuo Wang report that they manipulated chargers by exploiting voltage noise from the power supply, without maliciously modifying the chargers themselves.
This is not a finding that ordinary electrical noise automatically hacks a charger. The reported technique deliberately introduces voltage changes to affect the charger’s operation. The paper establishes the attack in the researchers’ tested setting, not a rate of real-world incidents or a count of vulnerable products in circulation.

How an attack through the power supply can affect charging
A Qi charger transfers power across a gap rather than through a direct electrical connection to the device. It also uses in-band communication: the power signal helps carry information between the charger and the device. As the University of Florida’s May 15, 2024 account explains, changes to voltage on the input DC bus can become voltage changes on the transmitter coil. Because that coil is involved in both power transfer and data modulation, interference can affect both the power sent and the information exchanged.

That relationship is the basis of VoltSchemer: the attack path begins at the power supply, then affects the charger’s transmitter coil and its interaction with the device. It is distinct from physically altering the charger’s electronics, which the paper says the approach does not require.

- Charging-related damage: They describe overcharging or overheating that can damage devices.

These are outcomes reported in the paper, not evidence that a particular attack has occurred to a particular consumer device. The available sources do not establish incident counts or identify a product-specific risk for an individual reader.

The authors report successful VoltSchemer attacks on nine top-selling commercial wireless chargers. That is the size of the reported test set—not an estimate of the share of all chargers that are vulnerable. The sources cited here do not identify the tested models in a way that supports a model-by-model warning, nor do they establish how widely the attack applies across charger designs, current products, or chargers already in use.

Accordingly, the result supports a specific conclusion: the researchers demonstrated this attack against nine commercial chargers under their experimental conditions. It does not establish that every Qi charger is vulnerable, that a particular brand or adapter is safe, or that this technique is being used in real-world attacks.
What is known about mitigation
The official USENIX listing notes that the authors discuss security implications and possible countermeasures, but the sources available here do not establish a complete consumer mitigation checklist. They do not justify treating a particular charger brand, power adapter, Qi version, or everyday practice as safe against VoltSchemer. Product-specific vulnerability status and the prevalence of the issue remain unresolved.

“VoltSchemer: Use Voltage Noise to Manipulate Your Wireless Charger” appeared at the 33rd USENIX Security Symposium (USENIX Security 24) in 2024, on pages 3979–3995. The University of Florida published an institutional account on May 15, 2024. The authors also posted an earlier arXiv preprint on February 18, 2024; the USENIX record is the final publication reference.
