Volkswagen and NXP demonstrated an Ultra-Wideband (UWB)-equipped Volkswagen concept car in 2019, showing how precise distance measurement could help resist key-fob relay attacks. The announcement was about a concept, not proof that Volkswagen had launched the world’s first production car with UWB. Volkswagen Netherlands’ current guidance says the new Golf is factory-fitted with UWB, but availability should be checked for the specific market, model year and trim.
What Volkswagen and NXP showed
On August 27, 2019, NXP announced that it and Volkswagen had demonstrated UWB capabilities in a Volkswagen concept car. The presentation included theft protection, gesture recognition, child-seat positioning and automated trailer-hitch activation. Parking, access and payment were described as possible future uses, not as confirmed features of a production Volkswagen. NXP’s 2019 announcement
Volkswagen’s Maik Rohde, then head of body electronics and car access systems, said: “The first UWB application we see is in theft protection – another security milestone which you will see in volume Volkswagen car models starting this year.” That was a forward-looking statement made in 2019, not current confirmation of availability in every Volkswagen. NXP CTO Lars Reger said: “We see enormous potential in UWB.” NXP’s 2019 announcement
NXP’s announcement also described its automotive UWB chip and noted that BMW Group, Continental and others were working on implementations through the Car Connectivity Consortium and IEEE. That indicates broader development activity; it does not establish which implementation is used in any particular production vehicle. NXP’s historical chip announcement

How UWB can help counter a relay attack
A relay attack attempts to extend communication between a passive key and a car, making the vehicle respond as if the key were nearby. UWB measures the time a signal takes to travel between devices and uses that time-of-flight measurement to estimate distance. NXP says this approach can distinguish a nearby key from one whose communication is being relayed or amplified; Volkswagen describes the purpose as checking whether the key is actually close to the car. Volkswagen Netherlands owner guidance · NXP’s UWB overview
NXP described UWB localization as accurate to “a few centimeters in real time” in 2019. This is the company’s description of the technology, not an independent measurement of the Volkswagen concept or a guarantee of that precision in every vehicle or environment. The cited sources do not provide an attack-success rate or an independent head-to-head vehicle-security test. NXP’s 2019 announcement

UWB addresses a particular relay method; it should not be treated as a guarantee against all car theft or every kind of attack. A signal-blocking pouch for a conventional passive key is a separate, non-integrated option rather than a UWB retrofit. Check that any pouch fits the key and verify its shielding claims; the cited sources do not test specific products. Volkswagen Netherlands owner guidance · NXP’s UWB overview
What Volkswagen says is available now
Volkswagen Netherlands’ owner guidance says the new Golf is factory-equipped with UWB to check whether the key is close to the vehicle. The page is specific to the Netherlands and does not establish availability for every country, model year or trim. If you are considering a particular car, confirm the feature with Volkswagen or the vehicle’s documentation for your market and specification. Volkswagen Netherlands owner guidance

Mobile Key is a different kind of access
The same Dutch guidance describes Volkswagen Mobile Key as NFC-based: the driver presents an Android smartphone to the door handle to unlock, then places it in the cabin’s Phone Box to start. Unlike passive keyless access, this requires deliberate interaction. Volkswagen says the function is currently available for Android smartphones; check local vehicle and phone compatibility before relying on it. Volkswagen Netherlands owner guidance
Parking location is not live tracking
Volkswagen says VW Connect records the car’s last parking location when the ignition is switched off. The company says this is not a vehicle-tracking service and cannot reliably follow a car being moved on a transporter. Use requires a Volkswagen ID and a separate contract, according to the Dutch guidance. Volkswagen Netherlands owner guidance

How digital-key radios can work together
Some digital-key designs assign different roles to different radios: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can support wake-up and pre-ranging, UWB can provide precise secure ranging and localization, and NFC can support pairing or deliberate close-range access. NXP’s reference design says it supports CCC Digital Key Release 4.0 and regional variants. It is a reference design, not evidence that the 2019 Volkswagen concept—or every production car—uses this exact arrangement. NXP Digital Key Reference System

- How entry works: Is access passive, or must you present a phone or key deliberately?
- Which radio does what: Check whether BLE is used for wake-up, UWB for distance measurement, or NFC for close-range access; implementation varies.
- Compatibility: Confirm the country, model year, trim and phone requirements for the exact vehicle.
