For most Windows 11 users, VLC is the better first-choice player when the priority is opening varied local files, DVDs, audio CDs, VCDs, or network streams with minimal codec troubleshooting. Choose Windows Media Player Legacy when you specifically need its music-library, playlist, metadata, CD-burning, or portable-player features. If you mean Microsoft’s newer Media Player app, that is a separate product aimed at the current built-in Windows video experience, including the 4K use case Microsoft documents.
The comparison is feature-based. The available documentation does not establish which player is faster, uses less memory or battery, or gives better picture quality on a particular computer.
First, identify which “Windows Media Player” you mean
Windows 11 can contain two different Microsoft players, and treating them as one product leads to a misleading comparison.
Windows Media Player Legacy
Windows Media Player Legacy is the traditional desktop application. Microsoft lists it as an optional feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11 rather than the preferred modern video app. Its documented strengths include organizing a music library, creating playlists, editing or displaying metadata and album art, creating audio CDs, transferring music to portable players, and streaming content.

The newer Media Player app
Microsoft’s current Media Player app is separate from Legacy. Microsoft recommends this app for modern video features, including the 4K use case it calls out in its Windows guidance. When a person says “Windows Media Player” without specifying the edition, ask whether they mean this app or Legacy before comparing features.
VLC is a third option, maintained by VideoLAN. VideoLAN describes it as a free, open-source, cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Its Windows download information lists Windows 11 support.

Does VLC play more formats than Windows Media Player?
VLC is the safer general-purpose choice when your collection contains files from many sources. VideoLAN’s description covers most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. That breadth is the practical reason to try VLC first when you do not know which container or codec a file uses.

“Most” is not “everything.” A protected stream, damaged file, unusual codec, incomplete download, or unsupported encryption can still fail. A file opening in VLC also does not prove that another Windows application has the same codec available.

Microsoft’s players use the media components installed in Windows. The file extension is not enough to determine whether playback will work: an .mkv, .mp4, or .avi file can contain different video, audio, subtitle, or protection combinations. Microsoft Support states that when Windows Media Player cannot play a file or shows an error, the required codec might not be installed or supported.
Formats Microsoft lists as built in
Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance lists these out-of-box formats. “Out of box” describes Microsoft’s documented baseline, not a promise that every Windows 11 device has exactly the same components.

Optional extensions
Microsoft identifies Microsoft Store extensions for additional support, including MPEG-2, HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1, and OGG-family formats. Whether an extension is needed depends on the exact file, Windows version, device, and components already installed. Installing an extension is not automatically the right fix: first identify the codec that the file actually uses.
The AC-3 change in Windows 11 version 24H2
AC-3 is a particularly important Windows 11 qualification. Microsoft says versions before Windows 11 24H2 include AC-3, while AC-3 is no longer included by default starting with 24H2. Some computer manufacturers may preinstall it, and an upgrade from an earlier Windows version may retain it. Therefore, “Windows 11 cannot play AC-3” is too broad, and “every 24H2 PC lacks AC-3” is also incorrect.

What happens with MKV, HEVC, and other common problem files?
MKV
MKV is a container, not a single codec. The same .mkv extension can hold different video and audio streams, subtitles, chapters, and embedded attachments. VLC is generally the simpler first test for a varied MKV collection because its purpose is broad multimedia playback. If a Microsoft player fails, inspect the streams and then check whether the required Windows codec or extension is installed.
HEVC/H.265
HEVC is one of the formats Microsoft lists under optional extensions rather than its basic format list. A Windows 11 installation may therefore need the relevant extension for Microsoft playback. VLC may be able to open the same file without that particular Windows Store extension, but the result still depends on the file and system.
AV1, VP9, MPEG-2, and OGG-family files
Microsoft also identifies AV1, VP9, MPEG-2, and OGG-family support as extension-dependent cases. Do not install all of them pre-emptively. Match the extension to the codec reported by the failing file, and remember that an extension’s availability can vary by device and Windows configuration.
Discs, streams, and local files
Choose VLC for a mixed media shelf
If your routine includes local downloads plus DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, or network streams, VLC has the clearest documented breadth. VideoLAN explicitly names those disc categories and various streaming protocols. That makes VLC the most practical single player for a mixed collection.

Choose a Microsoft player for a Windows-centered library
Legacy is more compelling when your main task is maintaining a music library rather than opening unusual video files. Microsoft documents playlists, metadata and album art, audio-CD creation, portable-player transfer, and streaming content as part of its feature set. The newer Media Player app is the relevant Microsoft choice when you want the current built-in video experience rather than the classic Legacy interface.
Neither description establishes that every protected stream, disc menu, codec, or network source will work. The source, regional restrictions, encryption, and installed components can change the result.
How to install or enable the right player in Windows 11
Install VLC
- Download the Windows 11 build from VideoLAN’s official VLC download page.
- Run the installer and keep the standard components unless you have a specific reason to change file associations or shortcuts.
- Open VLC from the Start menu and test one representative file from your collection before changing every default app.
- If you want VLC for a particular extension only, change that extension’s default in Settings > Apps > Default apps instead of assigning every media type at once.
Enable Windows Media Player Legacy
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Select View features (the label may appear as Add an optional feature on some Windows builds).
- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy, select it, and choose Next followed by Add.
- After installation, open Start and search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Test your music library and a representative video. If playback fails, continue with the codec and Windows-edition checks below rather than assuming the app itself is damaged.
Use the newer Media Player app
- Open Start and search for Media Player, not “Windows Media Player Legacy.”
- Use this app when you want Microsoft’s current built-in video experience, including the modern 4K scenario Microsoft documents.
- If the app is missing or an update is offered, use the Microsoft Store or Windows’ normal app-update path for your installation.
Windows 11 N editions
Windows 11 N editions exclude Windows Media Player and related media technologies by default. Microsoft describes the Media Feature Pack as the way to restore them.

- Check your edition in Settings > System > About, under Windows specifications.
- If the edition ends in N, open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Choose View features, search for Media Feature Pack, select it, and install it.
- Restart Windows when prompted, then test the Microsoft player again. Some applications may need to be repaired or reinstalled after the media components are added.
Which player should you choose?
Pick VLC when compatibility is the priority
- You regularly receive files from different people, cameras, downloads, or operating systems.
- You want one application that VideoLAN documents for broad file, disc, and streaming coverage.
- You would rather try a player than identify and install a Windows codec extension for each new format.
- You need DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, or various streaming protocols in the same tool.
This is a breadth recommendation, not a guarantee that VLC plays absolutely everything.

Pick Windows Media Player Legacy for music management
- Your workflow depends on a searchable music library and playlists.
- Album art and metadata organization matter.
- You create audio CDs or transfer music to a portable player using the classic Windows workflow.
- Your files already work with the codecs available on your Windows installation.
Remember that Legacy is an optional Windows feature, so it may not be present until you enable it.
Pick the newer Media Player app for Microsoft’s current video experience
- You specifically want the modern Microsoft app rather than the classic Legacy interface.
- You are following Microsoft’s recommendation for newer video features such as the documented 4K use case.
- You prefer a built-in Windows application and your files are supported by the codecs installed on the PC.
Use both
There is no requirement to make one application handle every media type. A practical setup is VLC for unusual videos, discs, and streams; Legacy for a carefully maintained music library; and the newer Media Player app for Microsoft’s current built-in video workflow. Assign defaults by extension so each application opens the files for which it is most useful.
Diagnose a file that will not play
Follow these checks in order. They separate a bad file from a missing Windows component and from a Windows-edition issue.

winver, and note whether the machine is on Windows 11 24H2 or another release. - Identify the actual codecs. The extension alone is insufficient. Use a media-information utility or the diagnostic information supplied by the file’s creator to determine the video, audio, subtitle, and protection formats.
- Try VLC. If VLC opens the file, the original failure is likely related to the Microsoft player’s available components, the file association, or the specific Windows app. It does not prove that every similar file will open.
- Check the Microsoft format list. For HEVC, VP9, AV1, MPEG-2, or OGG-family content, determine whether the corresponding optional extension is installed. Do not assume the extension is required until the file’s codec is known.
- Check AC-3 on 24H2. A 24H2 installation may lack AC-3 unless the computer maker supplied it or an earlier Windows upgrade retained it.
- Check for an N edition. Install the Media Feature Pack if Windows 11 N is missing Microsoft’s media technologies.
- Test a known-good file. If ordinary MP3 or H.264 content also fails, the issue may be the app installation, permissions, storage location, or a damaged file rather than one missing codec.
- Check protected or network content separately. A player can support a container and codec yet fail on encryption, authentication, a network protocol, or a damaged stream. VLC’s broad description is not a promise for every protected source.
Performance, battery, and picture quality: what is not established
The available official documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of VLC, Legacy, and the newer Media Player app on the same Windows 11 hardware. It does not establish a winner for startup speed, CPU use, RAM use, battery life, hardware-decoding efficiency, or picture quality. Those results can change with the processor, graphics driver, display, file resolution, codec, subtitles, refresh rate, and power mode.
If those factors decide your choice, measure them on your own machine using the same file and playback settings. Record the Windows build, player version, resolution, codec, subtitle state, power mode, and whether hardware decoding is enabled. Do not treat another computer’s result as a universal ranking.
Bottom line for Windows 11
Choose VLC as the default first test for varied local files, optical discs, and streams. Choose Windows Media Player Legacy when classic music-library management is the deciding feature. Choose the newer Media Player app when you mean Microsoft’s current built-in video player and want the modern experience Microsoft recommends for scenarios such as 4K. Before blaming either player, check the Windows edition, exact codec, installed extensions, and—on Windows 11 24H2—the changed AC-3 availability.
