VLC does not need to run as a plug-in inside Chrome for the options covered here. On a Chromebook, install VLC as a ChromeOS app; on Windows, macOS, or Linux, a third-party extension can send a media link to desktop VLC with help from a native integration component. If you already have a direct media-stream URL, you can also open it in VLC yourself. Which route works depends on your device and whether you have a media link or only a webpage.

VideoLAN describes VLC generally as “a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most video files and network streaming protocols.” That description does not mean every website exposes a stream VLC can play.
Use VLC as an app on a Chromebook
VideoLAN’s VLC for Chrome OS is a port of the player to ChromeOS. Its page says it can play most local video and audio, network streams including adaptive streaming, and DVD ISO files. It lists formats including MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS, Wv, and AAC, with codecs included rather than downloaded separately. These are claims for the ChromeOS app, not a guarantee that every file will play on every Chromebook.
- Install VLC for ChromeOS from the app listing linked by VideoLAN’s ChromeOS page.
- Launch VLC. On first run, choose a media folder so the app can index it for the library.
- Open a file from the library or use the app’s playback controls to access supported media.
VideoLAN says the app supports Chromebooks capable of running the latest Chrome OS. This is a ChromeOS app workflow; installing it does not add a VLC plug-in to Chrome.

Send a browser media link to desktop VLC
On a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, a third-party Chrome extension may provide a right-click or toolbar shortcut for opening media in the installed VLC application. The extension named Open in VLC™ media player says users can right-click an audio or video link and choose its context-menu item, or use the browser action. If it detects multiple media links, it prompts the user to select one.
The extension’s listing requires a minimal native-client application. That local helper is part of the bridge between Chrome and desktop VLC; the extension alone is not the complete setup. The listing explicitly says the project is independent and has no relationship to VLC or VideoLAN, so it should not be treated as a VideoLAN-endorsed tool.
- Install desktop VLC from an appropriate source for your operating system.
- Review the extension’s listing and install its required native-client component as directed there.
- In Chrome, try the extension’s context-menu item on a direct audio or video link, or use its browser action. If it finds multiple links, select the one you intend to open.
A separate extension also called Open in VLC™ documents another setup: configure the local VLC application path and install a native-client patch. Its listing describes it as an unofficial add-on unrelated to VLC or VideoLAN. Check the particular extension’s instructions rather than assuming the setup steps are interchangeable.

Chrome Web Store metadata for Open in VLC™ media player showed version 0.4.5, an update date of July 15, 2026, 300,000 users, and 866 ratings when accessed October 7, 2026. Those are changeable listing figures, not independent measurements of reliability or compatibility.

Open a direct network stream manually
If you have a direct media URL, VLC’s built-in network-stream command avoids the extension setup:
- Open VLC.
- Choose Media > Open Network Stream.
- Enter the network URL and choose Play.
VLC documentation describes network streaming as playback while content arrives, rather than waiting for the entire media file to download. This method still requires a URL VLC can access as a media stream.

Why copying a video page URL may not work
A webpage URL points to a page; a direct media URL points to audio or video content. A page can embed a player, use scripts to obtain changing stream addresses, or rely on access controls. Copying the page address and pasting it into VLC therefore does not guarantee playback. An extension can only open media links it can detect and hand off; it does not promise compatibility with every website or a way around protected playback.

- You have only the webpage address: Try the extension on the page if you have installed its native helper, but expect site compatibility to vary.
- You have a direct stream URL: Use Media > Open Network Stream in VLC.
- You are on a Chromebook: Use the ChromeOS VLC app for local files or supported streams.
- The stream is protected or inaccessible: Neither the manual network-stream route nor an extension is established as a way to bypass those restrictions.
VLC is free and open source, according to VideoLAN’s VLC page. The relevant VLC workflows here are software-based; they do not require buying a separate device.
