A black Vizio TV screen does not identify a single fault. Start by checking whether the TV and source are on, whether the correct input is selected, and whether cables are secure. Then press Menu: if the TV’s menu appears, try the picture controls; if it does not, the available guidance does not identify a specific failed part.
Start with the TV, source, and connection
- Check power. Make sure the TV appears to turn on. If it does not, check that its power cable is firmly attached and that the outlet works. If you are using a connected device, such as a cable box or streaming player, confirm that device is on as well.
- Check the cable and port. Confirm the external device is connected securely. Note which TV port it uses so you can select the matching input in the next step.
- Select the correct input. Press the TV’s Input button and choose the port used by the connected device. If an antenna or cable line connects directly to the TV, VIZIO’s guidance says to scan for channels.
These checks follow the troubleshooting guidance in VIZIO’s 2024 HD/FHD User Manual. Menu labels and controls can vary by model, so use the manual for your exact TV when available.
Check whether the TV’s menu appears
Press Menu on the Vizio remote. If the on-screen menu is visible, VIZIO recommends trying the Brightness, Contrast, or Backlight picture controls. Make one adjustment at a time and check whether the picture returns.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check

When basic checks do not resolve it
Find the TV’s exact model number and consult the VIZIO support portal for guidance relevant to that model. The instructions cited here do not provide a universal reset-button sequence, so avoid applying one from another model without checking your TV’s manual.
If the problem appears limited to one external connection and you have identified a suspect cable, testing with a known-working cable may help isolate that connection. A replacement HDMI cable is only relevant when an HDMI cable is actually in use and is suspected; it is not a general fix for every black screen.

What a black screen does—and does not—tell you
VIZIO’s 2024 HD/FHD manual covers a powered TV with no image, “No Signal,” power checks, input and connection checks, and picture adjustments. Its guidance supports checking those basics, but it does not establish one root cause for every black screen or confirm a hardware diagnosis from symptoms alone. The older VX200E User Manual includes similar basic checks for that specific older model; it should not be treated as universal instructions for current TVs.
