VIZIO Smart TV search is for finding shows, movies, and streaming content—not for entering arbitrary website addresses in a documented built-in web browser. To view a website on your TV, open it on a compatible laptop or mobile device and cast or mirror it, or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI. Which options work depends on your TV model and source device.
What VIZIO TV search can—and cannot—do
On the 2023 VIZIO Smart TV platform described in its user manual, search helps find TV shows and movies. VIZIO also describes unified streaming-content search in its mobile app. Those features are for entertainment discovery; VIZIO’s current platform descriptions and the manuals cited here do not document a general-purpose browser for opening any website on the TV. This is a statement about the documented features, not a guarantee about every model or older software version.
For shows, movies, or apps, launch the TV platform by pressing Home on the remote or selecting SmartCast from the inputs list on the documented 2023 platform, then use its search. That search is not a way to type a web address.
Ways to view a website on your VIZIO TV
Choose based on whether you want to browse on the TV screen using another device or need content from a supported app. Casting a compatible app may send only that app’s content; screen mirroring is the better fit when you want the TV to show the source device’s screen.

Mirror a laptop screen
- Check your TV’s model-specific manual or specifications to confirm it supports the mirroring method you plan to use. VIZIO says users can mirror a laptop screen with the Chrome browser on TVs that support Chromecast built-in; that guidance is not a compatibility guarantee for every TV. - Connect the laptop and TV using the supported method, following the instructions for your TV model and laptop. VIZIO’s 2023 manual describes mirroring a laptop or mobile device through Apple AirPlay or Chromecast built-in on supported models: VIZIO Smart TV Platform User Manual.
- Open the website in the laptop’s browser. The laptop handles browsing; the TV displays its screen.
Cast or mirror from a phone or tablet
- Check whether your TV and mobile device support a shared casting or mirroring standard. VIZIO documents casting from compatible apps and mobile-device mirroring through supported AirPlay or Chromecast features, but support varies by model and device. Start with VIZIO’s Chromecast information and your TV’s manual.
- For app casting, open the compatible app on your phone or tablet and use its cast function. This may send the app’s supported content rather than the entire screen, so it may not display a web page from a mobile browser.
- For full-screen mirroring, use a supported AirPlay or Chromecast option on the source device. AirPlay and HomeKit compatibility guidance on VIZIO’s 4K TV page recommends current iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Follow the steps for your particular TV and device rather than assuming every combination works.
Connect a laptop with HDMI
HDMI is a wired alternative when wireless mirroring is unavailable or inconvenient. It does not add a browser to the TV: you still browse on the laptop, while the TV acts as its display.
- Check that the laptop has a compatible video output and the TV has an unused HDMI input. Port and connectivity details are model-specific; for example, VIZIO lists details for the D55x-G1. Do not assume its specifications apply to other models.
- Connect the laptop to the TV with a compatible HDMI cable.
- Select the TV input connected to the laptop, then open the website on the laptop. The exact input name and instructions can vary by model.
What the VIZIO mobile app is for
VIZIO describes its mobile app as a tool for searching streaming content, controlling a paired TV, and casting content. The phone and TV need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for the control functions described on the app page. The 2023 platform manual also describes using a phone keyboard to enter text on supported platform generations. These features can make TV navigation and content search easier, but they do not establish that the app launches a general-purpose browser on the TV.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting
There is no single compatibility answer for every VIZIO television and source device in the cited official materials. Check the manual and specifications for your exact model, then confirm that the laptop or mobile device supports the same casting or mirroring method. VIZIO’s 4K TV page and D55x-G1 specifications illustrate why model-specific details matter; neither should be treated as a universal list for all TVs.

- If you need a specific page visible, open it on a laptop or mobile browser and use mirroring where supported.
- If you are casting from an app, check whether it supports casting the content you want; app casting may not include the browser or the whole device screen.
- If wireless options are not supported, check whether the laptop and TV can connect over HDMI.
- If a connection fails, verify the model’s supported features and follow its manual rather than relying on steps for a different VIZIO TV.
