Vistex founder and CEO Sanjay Shah died after a suspended cage carrying him and company president Raju Datla fell during the company’s 25th-anniversary celebration at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, India. Datla was injured. January 2024 reports said police were investigating the equipment and safety arrangements; they did not establish a final finding of responsibility.

What happened at the Vistex anniversary event?

The accident occurred during Vistex’s silver-jubilee celebration at Ramoji Film City. Shah, 56, and Datla, 52, were being lowered in an iron cage toward a stage as part of an event-opening stunt when a supporting wire or chain reportedly failed. The Indian Express said the cage was being lowered from about 20 feet; CBS Chicago reported the men fell about 15 feet onto the main stage. Those are separate measurements from the outlets’ accounts, not a single agreed height.

The Indian Express reported that Shah died at a hospital at 12:10 a.m. Friday after the Thursday-evening incident. Datla was reported to be in critical condition at the time of publication. The reports gave different audience estimates: The Indian Express attributed a figure of more than 680 attendees to a police sub-inspector, while CBS Chicago reported 700, citing a CBS affiliate in India. Neither figure should be treated as a settled official count.

What did police say about the accident?

In its January 20, 2024 report, updated January 23, The Indian Express said an FIR had been registered at Abdullapurmet police station under sections 304A, 336 and 287 of the Indian Penal Code. The reported provisions concerned causing death by a rash or negligent act, endangering human life or personal safety, and negligent conduct involving machinery.

The report said Ramoji Film City management, the event management company and others responsible for safe conduct had been booked. These were allegations and procedural steps in an investigation, not proof of culpability or a final legal determination.

The Indian Express quoted investigating sub-inspector D Karnakar Reddy saying police had written to experts about the machinery and were awaiting their response. He said negligence still had to be proved; the report said no arrests had been made at that point. These details describe the investigation as reported in January 2024. The sources cited here do not establish a later case disposition.
