A virus warning that appears in a browser and tells you to call a phone number is usually a tech-support scam, not an official Microsoft alert. Microsoft Support states: “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.” Do not call, click, pay, install software, or give anyone remote access because of the message alone.
Why a browser virus warning is suspicious
Scam pages are designed to look like Windows or Microsoft. They may use a Microsoft logo, red or flashing colors, full-screen mode, repeated pop-ups, a fake scan, or loud audio. Those visual effects can be produced by a webpage and do not prove that Windows has detected malware.
The strongest warning sign is what the message asks you to do. A purported Microsoft error that supplies a phone number conflicts with Microsoft’s published guidance. The Federal Trade Commission also says that real security pop-up warnings do not ask you to call a phone number.

What to do immediately
- Do not interact with the alert. Do not call its number, click its buttons or links, enter passwords or card details, pay for a fix, install a recommended program, or allow remote control.
- Close the browser. Try Alt+F4. If the page prevents normal closure, restart the computer rather than following its instructions.
- Reopen security tools independently. Do not use a link or button in the warning. In Windows, open the Start menu, search for Windows Security, open it, select Virus & threat protection, install any available security-intelligence updates, and run a Full scan.
- Update the system and browser. Install pending Windows and browser updates through their normal settings pages, not through a pop-up.
How to check whether the computer is actually infected
The appearance of a warning cannot diagnose the machine. A browser scam is one possibility, but malware can also display deceptive alerts. Microsoft documents a historical Trojan, Trojan:Win32/FakeIA.I, that showed false malware warnings to encourage downloads or rogue security products. Its threat entry was published on May 13, 2009 and updated on September 15, 2017; it documents a behavior, not the current prevalence of that threat or the condition of your device.

Use an independent scan
- Open Windows Security yourself and run a full scan.
- Review detected items in Windows Security and follow its removal instructions.
- If the scan reports a threat, allow the security product to quarantine or remove it, then restart and scan again when instructed.
Look for corroborating symptoms
Unexpected applications, browser extensions, account sign-ins, disabled security settings, unexplained network activity, or continuing alerts after the browser is closed justify further investigation. A single alarming webpage, by itself, is not evidence of infection.
If you called, paid, installed software, or granted remote access
Act according to what the scammer obtained. Do not continue the conversation or let them reconnect.

If you installed a program or remote-access tool
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if the person still has access.
- Uninstall applications the scammer asked you to install. Remove unfamiliar browser extensions as well.
- Run a full scan with Windows Security after updating it.
- Install operating-system and application security updates.
- Consider resetting the device if the scammer had remote access or you cannot establish that the system is clean. Back up only personal files you trust before a reset.
If you entered passwords
From a different, trusted device when possible, change the exposed passwords. Change any other account that reused them, and enable multifactor authentication where available. Check account-recovery details and recent sign-in activity for unauthorized changes.
If you shared payment details or paid
Contact the card issuer or payment provider immediately, explain that the transaction resulted from a tech-support scam, and ask about stopping or disputing it. Monitor statements for additional charges.

Report the incident
Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission and through Microsoft’s reporting channels. Preserve the phone number, screenshots, payment records, and names of installed programs if you can do so safely.
Safer ways to verify a warning
Verification should start outside the alert. Open Windows Security from the Start menu, contact an organization through a phone number or website you already know to be genuine, or type the organization’s address yourself rather than using a pop-up link. Microsoft says its error and warning messages do not include phone numbers, so a number displayed by a purported Microsoft alert should never be your verification route.

Protection in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft documents a Scareware blocker feature in Edge that is intended to detect and block deceptive alerts. Edge controls and menu names can change, so check the current Edge settings and Microsoft documentation before relying on a particular location or behavior. Quick decision checklist
- Phone number displayed? Treat the message as a scam and do not call.
- Message appeared in a browser? Close the browser and verify through Windows Security.
- Asked for money, software installation, or remote access? Refuse and disconnect.
- Already shared information or access? Remove requested software, scan, update, change passwords, contact your card provider, and report the scam.
