No: the public dispute involving Factory.ai does not establish that the company is ending. The disagreement over former adviser Chris Degnan’s departure remains unresolved, while Factory announced a $200 million financing at a $5 billion valuation on September 15, 2026. That funding is not a guarantee of success, but Vinod Khosla’s criticism is an opinion—not proof that Factory is failing.
What sparked the Factory.ai dispute?
On September 30, 2026, TechCrunch reported conflicting accounts from Factory CEO Matan Grinberg and former board adviser Chris Degnan. Grinberg said he had fired Degnan over alleged unethical conduct involving AI software company Cognition. Degnan said he resigned after telling Grinberg he was taking a role at Cognition. Degnan also said Grinberg asked him to consider a full-time role at Factory, which he declined. TechCrunch’s report said Grinberg claimed to have email evidence, but he had not shared it in the report.
Those accounts do not establish whether confidential information was shared. Grinberg’s archived public post accused Cognition of seeking confidential information, but the post records his allegation; it does not independently verify it. The available reporting does not substantiate claims that Degnan stole or shared secrets, or that Cognition conducted espionage.

TechCrunch reported that investor Vinod Khosla called Factory a “struggling second tier competitor” and criticized Grinberg’s conduct. The phrase is Khosla’s public opinion amid the dispute, not a neutral rating or independent assessment of Factory’s performance. Khosla Ventures had invested in both Factory and Cognition, a relevant context for readers weighing his comments.

What is Factory, and what has it said about its business?
Factory describes itself as an enterprise software platform for autonomous software engineering. In its June 2026 announcement of Factory 2.0, it presented a system intended to connect agents across software development work, including code review, security analysis, documentation, quality assurance, and incident response. The announcement’s statement that “The system must improve over time by observing itself” describes Factory’s product vision; it is not an independent technical evaluation. Factory’s Factory 2.0 announcement provides the company’s product description.
Factory’s funding and adoption figures are company-reported. Its September 15, 2026 announcement said it raised $200 million at a $5 billion valuation, taking reported total funding above $400 million. It named Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital, Sound Ventures, NEA, Mantis VC, and Clearlake among financing participants. The company said it serves hundreds of thousands of developers and listed Nvidia, Blackstone, RBC, Palo Alto Networks, Adobe, and T-Mobile as customers. These are claims from Factory’s announcement, not independently audited measurements. Read Factory’s September 2026 financing announcement.

Earlier, on April 16, 2026, Factory announced a $150 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation. It said its Droids were used daily by hundreds of thousands of developers and claimed revenue had doubled month over month for six consecutive months. Those statements are historical company claims, not independently verified financial results. Factory’s Series C announcement contains the original figures.
Factory had also announced a $50 million Series B at a $300 million valuation on September 25, 2025. The company’s Series B announcement is the source for that earlier financing.

No conclusion about Factory’s future follows from this dispute alone. The conflict concerns competing accounts of an adviser’s departure and an unsubstantiated allegation; Khosla’s criticism is not a performance measurement. The recent financing indicates that Factory announced substantial investment, but funding and valuation do not prove durable revenue, product quality, or long-term viability.
Assessing whether Factory can compete would require evidence beyond the statements in this dispute—for example, comparable results for software-engineering task quality, cost, security, model flexibility, deployment controls, customer adoption, and reproducible benchmarks. The available reporting and company announcements do not provide neutral, directly comparable measurements against Cognition. For now, the accurate takeaway is that Factory faces public criticism and unresolved allegations, not that its end has been established.
