Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres appeared to stifle a laugh as Sweden manager Graham Potter joked about Manchester City’s Premier League charges during a national-team press conference. Potter was discussing illness-related withdrawals from Sweden’s camp when he compared their number with City’s charges, according to GOAL.
What did Graham Potter say about Manchester City’s charges?
Potter was explaining that Sweden had been affected by an infection or bug and had called in replacements. GOAL quoted him as saying: “We’ve been hit with an infection or a bug. Not ideal, but it happens. So we’ve called in some players who have been fantastic.”

He then added: “In terms of how many withdrawals, we’ve had a similar number to Man City’s charges, I think.” Potter followed the remark with, “Too soon?” GOAL reported that the room responded with gasps and laughter.

Why was Viktor Gyökeres trying not to laugh?
Gyökeres, seated beside Potter, was shown on camera appearing to suppress a laugh at the joke, as described by GOAL. The moment was a reaction to Potter’s quip; it does not establish that Gyökeres commented on Manchester City’s case or took a position on its merits.

What was Manchester City found guilty of?
The joke referred to the Premier League disciplinary case against Manchester City. The Associated Press reported that the league announced the independent commission’s verdict on 29 September 2026. The commission found City guilty of all charges related to serious financial breaches over nine seasons and of most charges concerning failure to cooperate, according to the AP timeline.
AP reported that the commission found City had used “sham” contracts intended to artificially inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million. The Premier League case involved 115 charges, as summarized in AP’s explainer. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters called the case and decision “the most significant in Premier League history,” AP reported.

City disputed the findings and said it would appeal. The verdict is the commission’s finding, not a final sanctions outcome: AP reported that sanctions were a separate step.
