This IEEE Spectrum Video Friday roundup, published December 12, 2025, brings together demonstrations from across robotics: a dog-shaped musculoskeletal research robot, a snail-inspired gripper concept, speech-driven fabrication, machine vision, rescue robotics, insect-scale flight, and more. It is a collection of clips, not one project or a product comparison.
What is the dog musculoskeletal robot?
Suzumori Endo Lab at Science Tokyo presents a dog-shaped research prototype built with thin McKibben muscles. Its shoulder uses a flexible structure the lab describes as “hammock-like,” with the aim of investigating the biomechanics of dog musculoskeletal systems. The roundup quotes the laboratory: “This robot mimics the flexible ‘hammock-like’ shoulder structure to investigate the biomechanical functions of dog musculoskeletal systems.” This is a research platform description, not evidence of a commercially available robot or a measured performance result. IEEE Spectrum’s roundup identifies the clip as “Dog Musculoskeletal Robot.”
What does the Holey Snailbot demonstrate?
Freeform Robotics’ clip is titled “SnailBot – Enhancing Connection Strength Through Holey Sphere and Gripper Mechanisms.” The name points to its design theme: a holey sphere paired with gripper mechanisms intended to enhance connection strength. The roundup provides no measurements or detailed experimental results, so the clip should be read as a design demonstration rather than proof of a quantified improvement. The roundup labels the segment “HOLEY SNAILBOT!!!”

The remaining selections span different research questions and tasks. The descriptions convey what project teams and vendors say their systems do; they do not establish independent comparative performance or broad deployment.

How to interpret the demonstrations
- Look for the question each clip is exploring. The dog robot concerns biomechanics; the Snailbot focuses on connection strength; other segments address fabrication, perception, manipulation, rescue, flight, sensing, or autonomous driving.
- Separate a demonstration from validation. A video can show a system attempting a task, but these descriptions do not provide standardized results that support ranking the projects or concluding that they are ready for widespread use.
- Distinguish research prototypes from named products. OAK 4 is the roundup’s clearest named physical product, but its vendor segment is not an independent product test. The other clips are framed as research projects, demonstrations, or company presentations.
