Viasat’s residential satellite internet can reach homes where cable and fiber are unavailable, but its “unlimited” plan is not unlimited in the sense most people expect, and the advertised price is a starting point rather than a quote for your address. This review is based on Viasat’s own published plan, label, FAQ, and announcement pages as of October 7, 2026. It is not a test of the service, and it does not report how Viasat performs for real customers.
The short answer
Viasat currently lists two residential plans, Essentials and Unleashed. Both start at $99.99 per month after an introductory period. During the first three months, Essentials is listed at $39.99 per month and Unleashed at $69.99 per month, subject to conditions. Essentials includes 150 GB of high-speed data and then continues on unlimited standard data. Unleashed includes unlimited high-speed data, but Viasat says heavy use can be deprioritized during congestion. Essentials carries a 24-month minimum term, while Unleashed is month-to-month.
Current plans at a glance
The figures below come from Viasat’s residential plans page, viewed October 7, 2026, and from Viasat’s FAQ on contract terms.

| Item | Essentials | Unleashed |
|---|---|---|
| High-speed data | 150 GB | Unlimited high-speed data, subject to the usage threshold described below |
| After high-speed allowance | Unlimited standard data, which Viasat may deprioritize during congestion | Not applicable; usage trending above Viasat’s typical-use threshold may be deprioritized during congestion |
| Listed starting price after introductory period | $99.99/month | $99.99/month |
| Listed introductory price (first three months) | $39.99/month | $69.99/month |
| Minimum service term (Viasat FAQ) | 24 months | No minimum term; month-to-month |
| Early termination fee | Viasat’s FAQ says cancellation carries no early termination fee for month-to-month service; confirm the fee terms for a 24-month term in your agreement | None stated for month-to-month service |
What “unlimited” means on each plan
The word “unlimited” describes how much data a plan will allow, not how fast or how reliably it will run. Viasat’s own wording makes this clear, and the difference matters for anyone who streams video, runs cloud backups, or works from home.
#1 Best Overall
- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
Essentials
Essentials covers the first 150 GB of data at high speed. After that, service continues on unlimited standard data. Viasat says standard data can be deprioritized behind other users during congestion. There is no separate overage charge, but Viasat’s broadband label explainer warns that service can slow significantly depending on plan, location, and congestion.
Unleashed
Unleashed is the plan Viasat presents as unlimited high-speed data. The exception is network-level: Viasat says usage trending above its typical-use threshold may be deprioritized during congestion. Viasat does not publish that threshold on the pages reviewed here, so a heavy user cannot tell from the plan page alone where the line sits. Ask Viasat for the threshold in writing before you rely on the plan for sustained high-bandwidth use.
Contracts and cancellation
Viasat’s FAQ says Essentials requires a 24-month minimum service term, and Unleashed has no minimum term and runs month-to-month. The FAQ also says month-to-month service can be cancelled without an early termination fee. Because contract terms can differ by offer and by address, read the Terms and Conditions and the broadband label you receive for your address before you sign. If a sales representative quotes a different term, get that term in the order confirmation.

What you will actually pay
There is no universal monthly total. The advertised figures are starting prices, and the introductory offer excludes equipment lease fees, add-ons, taxes, and surcharges. Viasat’s broadband label explainer lists the following charges, which may apply to your order:
Introductory and starting prices
The $39.99 and $69.99 figures apply only during the first three months and only to new customers who qualify. Viasat’s page also says the offer must be mentioned when ordering by phone. After the introductory period, the listed starting price is $99.99 per month for both plans. Add the other charges below to estimate your real cost.
Equipment, lease, and installation
Viasat’s label explainer describes equipment lease charges, installation charges, and a possible one-time lifetime lease. Leased equipment must be returned when service is cancelled. A lifetime lease covers use for as long as you keep the equipment and the service, but it may need to be renewed after an equipment or plan change. Ask whether your address requires a one-time lifetime lease and what it would cost compared with monthly leasing.

Fees and taxes
Viasat’s label explainer describes an administrative cost-recovery fee. Government taxes vary by location. Neither figure is stated as a single amount on the pages reviewed here, so you will only see them on your order or your label.
Speeds and latency: read your label, not the headline
Viasat’s label explainer says typical speeds and latency are plan-specific. Speeds vary with congestion and usage, and Viasat updates its typical speed and latency data quarterly. The label for your address is the only document that reflects what Viasat expects you to receive there. Do not treat advertised maximum speeds as typical speeds, and do not copy a generic speed range from any review, including this one, into your planning.
Satellite connections also carry latency that is higher than most terrestrial services. The label is the right place to check that number for your plan and location before you decide whether the service suits video calls or online gaming.

The ViaSat-3 F2 rollout and Unleashed Max
On September 17, 2026, Viasat announced that ViaSat-3 F2 had entered service across the Americas, describing expanded capacity, flexibility, and resilience. Viasat Chairman and CEO Mark Dankberg said: “With the VS3 constellation now fully operational, we have substantially expanded our ability to deliver high-quality connectivity where demand is growing fastest and introduced new forms of resilience for our government and commercial customers.” That is a corporate statement about network infrastructure. It is not a measurement of any household’s speed or latency.
A September 30, 2026 Viasat article describes a redesigned residential plan rollout tied to ViaSat-3 F2. It names Essentials and Unleashed as currently available and describes a new plan called Unleashed Max that launches with the ViaSat-3 F2 service rollout. That article gives promotional starting prices for a 12-month period and says full details will be updated when the plans go live. It does not settle Unleashed Max’s final terms or where it will be offered.
The live plans page still shows only Essentials and Unleashed, with a three-month introductory discount. The two sources therefore disagree on promotion length and rollout detail. Treat Unleashed Max as announced but not yet confirmed for your address, and do not assume its 12-month promotion applies to the three-month offers shown on the current page.

How to compare Viasat with Starlink and HughesNet
Viasat’s own comparison for its Unleashed plan names Starlink and HughesNet. It looks at data policies, published speed ranges, contract status, professional installation, live customer care, and built-in Wi-Fi. Viasat dates that comparison to public data as of April 23, 2026, and it is written by Viasat, so use it as a checklist rather than as an independent verdict.
A fair comparison needs the same measurements from each provider for the same address. Use this table to organize what you collect.
| Comparison point | What to collect for each provider | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Full monthly cost | Introductory price, post-promotion price, equipment lease, installation, taxes, and fees | Order quote and address-specific broadband label |
| Typical speeds and latency | Typical download, upload, and latency for your plan and location | Broadband label for your address |
| Data policy | High-speed allowance, deprioritization rules, and any usage threshold | Plan terms and label |
| Term and cancellation | Minimum term, early termination fee, and equipment return rules | Terms and Conditions and order confirmation |
| Installation and equipment | Professional installation requirement, equipment ownership or lease, and built-in Wi-Fi | Order quote and label |
| Support access | Hours and channels for live customer care | Provider’s support pages at the time you compare |
| Availability | Whether service is offered at your exact address | Provider’s address check tool |
What this review cannot tell you
The evidence here is Viasat’s own plan, label, FAQ, and announcement material. It does not include independent speed tests, customer satisfaction data, or outside verification of Viasat’s congestion policies. No measured performance is reported in this review, and nothing here establishes how Viasat performs in your area during peak hours. For those answers, use the address-specific label and, if possible, talk to current customers in your area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChecklist before you order
- Enter your exact service address on Viasat’s site or call to confirm which plans are offered there.
- Ask whether the $39.99 or $69.99 introductory price applies to you, and whether it is the Essentials or the Unleashed offer.
- Request the broadband label for your address and check typical speeds, latency, and the congestion language for the plan you choose.
- Confirm the term: 24 months for Essentials, or month-to-month for Unleashed, based on your order.
- Get a written total for the first 12 months, including equipment lease or lifetime lease, installation, taxes, and fees.
- Ask whether Unleashed Max is available at your address and what its final terms are before you choose a plan that might change.
- Ask Viasat for the Unleashed usage threshold if you plan heavy, sustained use.
The Bottom Line
Viasat’s residential service is worth pricing out if your local options are limited, but read the plan labels as the terms they are. Essentials has a clear high-speed cap and a 24-month commitment. Unleashed has no high-speed cap in its name, yet it still carries congestion-based deprioritization and an undisclosed usage threshold. The advertised introductory prices are real only for qualifying new customers and only for three months, and the rollout of Unleashed Max is not yet settled for any particular address.
