France’s data-protection authority, the CNIL, said a cyberattack affecting health-insurance payment operators Viamedis and Almerys involved data on more than 33 million people. The incident was reported in late January 2024. The exposed information included identity and insurance-contract details—not medical records or bank details, which the CNIL said were not involved.
What happened in the Viamedis and Almerys breach?
Viamedis and Almerys manage third-party payment for complementary health insurers and mutuals in France. In this system, the operator helps settle covered healthcare costs between an insured person, the insurer and a healthcare provider. The CNIL said it was informed that both operators had suffered a cyberattack at the end of January 2024, affecting more than 33 million people. The CNIL’s incident notice gives the scale but does not establish a historical ranking. The phrase “largest-ever” therefore should not be treated as a verified all-time comparison.
What information was involved—and what was not?
For insured people and their family members, the CNIL listed these data categories as involved:
- Civil status and date of birth
- Social-security number
- Name of the health insurer
- Guarantees, or coverage details, in the insurance contract
The CNIL explicitly said that bank details, medical data, health reimbursements, postal addresses, phone numbers and email addresses were not concerned by this incident. The exposed information could still help someone craft a convincing message by linking a person’s identity to their insurer or coverage, but the CNIL’s notice does not describe a leak of medical histories, payment-account information or contact details.

How can you check whether you were affected?
The CNIL says it cannot tell individuals whether they are concerned. The complementary health insurers that used Viamedis or Almerys are responsible for notifying affected people individually and directly. If you are unsure, contact your insurer using a phone number or website you already trust, rather than details in an unexpected message.
Do not enter your social-security number into an unofficial breach-check site. A claim that a website can verify your status is not a substitute for an insurer’s direct notification.

What should you do if your information may be involved?
- Treat unexpected messages cautiously. Be especially alert to calls, texts or emails about health reimbursements, insurance coverage or urgent account problems. Confirm the sender through a known, independent channel before sharing information or following a link.
- Review account activity. The CNIL advises periodically checking activity and transactions on your various accounts. Pay attention to anything you do not recognize and use the relevant organization’s official reporting process if you find it.
- Remember that other leaks can add context. The CNIL notes that information from this incident could be combined with data from earlier leaks. That can make a fraudulent approach more personalized even though contact details were not part of this breach.
These are precautions against possible misuse; the CNIL notice does not establish that a particular scam has already resulted from this incident.

The CNIL said its president had decided to launch investigations quickly, including to assess whether the operators’ security measures before and in response to the incident met GDPR obligations. The official support-site page says a preliminary investigation was opened and assigned to the Paris police cybercrime unit. That page, updated 10 August 2026, also says the online complaint-letter procedure for this incident closed on 20 February 2025; it is not a currently available process. The available official information does not establish a final CNIL decision or sanction.

The official material cited here does not establish who carried out the attack, the precise intrusion method, how many records were successfully taken versus otherwise exposed, or whether any particular individual was affected.
