VF Corporation, the parent company of Vans, said an attacker stole personal data associated with approximately 35.5 million consumers during a December 2023 cyber incident. That figure is VF’s preliminary estimate in a January 18, 2024 SEC filing—not a final, independently verified count—and the filing does not identify the data fields or confirm whether any particular customer was affected.
What happened at VF Corporation?
VF said it detected unauthorized activity on part of its IT systems on December 13, 2023. The company activated its incident response plan, brought in external cybersecurity experts, began containment and remediation, and shut down some systems. VF believed the threat actor had been ejected by December 15, while investigation and remediation continued. VF’s January 18, 2024 Form 8-K/A describes the response.
In that amendment, VF estimated that personal data associated with approximately 35.5 million individual consumers had been stolen. The company characterized the number as a preliminary estimate from an ongoing investigation. It is not a final count, and the filing does not establish that all people associated with the estimate were Vans customers; VF owns multiple brands.
What information did VF say was stolen?
The filing refers to “personal data” but does not specify the fields involved. It does not say whether the stolen data included names, email addresses, mailing addresses, or other particular identifiers. It also does not establish which consumers were affected or which jurisdictions they live in.

VF made narrower statements about its direct-to-consumer IT systems: those systems did not retain consumer Social Security numbers, bank account information, or payment-card information, and VF said it had not detected evidence to date that consumer passwords were acquired. These statements do not cover every VF system, customer channel, or possible data category, and they are not a complete list of what may have been stolen.
Was my Vans or VF customer account affected?
The SEC filing does not identify individual affected customers or explain how a consumer can check whether their information was included. The reported estimate alone cannot confirm that a particular Vans shopper—or any customer of another VF brand—was affected. The sources cited here also do not establish which consumers received individual notice or whether VF offered monitoring services.

If you receive a message claiming to be a breach notice, verify it through a contact method or account page you reach independently, rather than through links or phone numbers in an unexpected message. Do not provide a password or payment details in response to an unsolicited request. This is a general precaution; the filing does not report that VF passwords or payment-card information were stolen.

VF reported that the incident affected inventory replenishment, order fulfillment, e-commerce demand, and wholesale shipments. In its January 2024 amendment, the company said orders were caught up and systems were substantially restored, with minor operational impacts remaining. The amendment’s operational update describes recovery at that time; it is not a current service-status report.

What has VF said since the January 2024 estimate?
VF’s fiscal 2026 annual filing mentions the December 2023 incident in a broader discussion of cybersecurity risks and possible operational, reputational, legal, and regulatory consequences. That retrospective disclosure provides company risk context; it does not report a new exposure or revise the 35.5 million estimate. VF’s fiscal 2026 filing is the later reference.

No. SEC staff guidance describes a filing requirement for public companies: generally, a registrant must file a Form 8-K under Item 1.05 within four business days after determining a cybersecurity incident is material, with a specified process for delaying disclosure in certain national-security or public-safety circumstances. That is an issuer-disclosure rule, not a consumer notification deadline. The SEC staff statement explains the disclosure context.
