Verizon says its storm readiness rests on three things: backup power at its cell sites, alternate transport for its network if underground fiber is damaged, and mobile network equipment that can be moved to where it is needed. For phone owners, the company’s current guidance adds one practical option: compatible phones can send text messages by satellite if cellular service is interrupted. Verizon does not promise that any of this will keep your phone online during a storm, so the steps you take before the weather arrives still matter.
One caveat applies to the whole article. Verizon’s response page carries an October 7, 2026 publication date and October 2026 updates, but the headline names Hurricane Isaias, which was also the name of an Atlantic storm in 2020. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish which storm the page is about, so the details below describe what Verizon currently states, not a confirmed account of any particular storm’s effects.
What Verizon’s response page says, and when
The page is Verizon’s own statement of its preparations. It is a primary source for what the company says it is doing. It is not independent evidence that service will stay up in any given area. Verizon’s operational claims below should be read as company statements.

How Verizon says its network is being protected
Backup power at cell sites
Verizon states that all of its macro cell sites have backup battery power and that nearly all of its regional sites have generator backup. The company also says it has checked and refueled its backup systems. Batteries cover short outages and bridge the time before generators start, so the battery reserve at a given tower, and how long a generator can run, depend on local conditions that the page does not describe.

Alternate transport if fiber is cut
Verizon says it has prepared backup microwave transport in case terrestrial fiber is affected. Microwave links carry traffic between sites over radio instead of cable, which lets a cell site stay connected to the core network when a buried or aerial fiber route fails. The page does not say where these links are deployed or how much capacity they carry.
Deployable mobile assets
The page says Verizon has staged mobile assets and portable generators and that nearly 3,000 network and satellite assets are available for deployment. It names three possible uses: mobile cell sites, emergency command centers, and self-contained basecamp operations.

Verizon also describes its Frontline Crisis Response Team as available around the clock. According to the company, the team coordinates with emergency management agencies and deploys portable satellite assets, charging stations and emergency vehicles to support public safety agencies at no cost to those agencies. This is Verizon’s description of the service. The page does not say how many teams exist or where they are stationed.

Compatible Verizon customers can send text messages by satellite when terrestrial cellular service is interrupted. Verizon’s page gives three device examples, shown below. The page presents them as examples rather than a complete list, so check Verizon’s current device list before relying on this feature.

Satellite messaging is a narrow fallback, and it has limits the page does not remove:
- It is for text messages. It does not give you ordinary cellular data for browsing, maps or video.
- It is not a guarantee of connectivity. Coverage depends on sky visibility and the satellite service itself, and the page does not give an outage-proof figure.
- Geographic availability and feature limits are not fully spelled out on the page, so confirm them with Verizon for your area.
What to do before the storm
Verizon’s guidance for customers covers charging, protection, planning and information. The company’s broader severe-weather guide, published April 17, 2024, adds the portable battery pack and car charger recommendations. The American Red Cross publishes checklists that Verizon’s guide also points to. Each step below improves your personal readiness, but none of them guarantees network service.

Charge everything and carry backup power
- Charge phones, tablets and power banks before the storm arrives.
- Carry a portable battery pack. Verizon’s 2024 guide recommends one, and it keeps your phone powered when the electricity is out. It does not restore cell coverage.
- Keep a car charger in the vehicle if you may need to drive to a charging point.
Protect devices from water
- Keep phones and accessories dry. A waterproof phone pouch is a low-cost way to protect a phone during heavy rain.
Save information and plan contact
- Save key emergency numbers in your phone and on paper.
- Agree on a family communication plan, including a meeting place and a contact outside the affected area.
- Back up important photos to the cloud before the storm.
- Download weather, news and safety apps while you still have a connection.
Dated network figures, and how to read them
Verizon’s 2024 severe-weather article includes the network asset counts below. They describe the company’s fleet at that time. They are not current totals, and the 2026 page’s “nearly 3,000” figure uses different categories, so the two should not be compared directly.

Checking network status during a storm
Verizon says customers can check local network status on its website or in the My Verizon app. Status pages change quickly during an event, so open the page while you still have a connection and check it again after the storm passes.
