The ONT Power Supply Unit (OPSU) is the power adapter that connects to a household electrical outlet and supplies electricity to Verizon’s Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT converts signals from Verizon’s fiber network into signals home equipment can use. Keep the OPSU plugged in: Verizon says the ONT needs power for Fios services to work.
What the OPSU does
The OPSU is part of the ONT’s power arrangement, not a router, modem, or battery backup. It brings power from a nearby outlet to the ONT. Verizon’s business support page describes the OPSU indicator as green during normal operation; a dark indicator means power is not flowing from the outlet to the ONT. That indicates a power-path issue, but does not by itself prove the adapter has failed. Installation and the power light
Verizon says its technician installs the ONT and its power supply. The installation requires access to a three-prong electrical outlet close to the ONT. A separate Battery Backup Unit (BBU) is installed if ordered. Verizon Professional Technician Installation

What happens during a power outage?
The OPSU itself is not outage backup. Verizon’s backup choices depend on the equipment installed, and its guidance describes battery backup as supporting Verizon voice service, including emergency 911 dialing, rather than keeping Fios internet or TV online. The stated durations below are Verizon’s figures for the specified configurations, not guarantees for every battery’s age or condition. Verizon battery-backup guidance

Choosing or replacing backup equipment
Confirm what ONT and power arrangement are installed before choosing backup equipment. Verizon says PowerReserve compatibility can be confirmed during installation, and its support guidance presents backup options as equipment-dependent. A backup unit is not a universal replacement for the OPSU.

If you already have a compatible BBU and need its battery, Verizon specifies a 12 V, 7.2 Ah sealed lead-acid battery and says replacements may be purchased from Verizon or a third party. Match the existing battery label, terminals, and dimensions; Verizon’s guidance does not establish that one battery fits every BBU. A search for “12V 7.2Ah sealed lead acid battery” is relevant only to a compatible BBU battery replacement—not to the ONT power supply.

Do not choose a generic power adapter based on appearance alone. Check the installed ONT’s labels and requirements or ask Verizon to identify the correct supply.
