If Venmo says your payment was declined or failed, open your transaction feed before you send anything again. A declined payment has not gone through, but a pending payment may still complete, and Venmo does not let you change the payment method once a payment has been sent. Resubmitting too early can mean paying twice.
Identify the status before you act
Venmo treats a declined payment and a pending payment differently, and the difference decides whether you should send again. Venmo’s Payment Declined help page says: “If you get a message that your Venmo payment can’t be completed right now, there could be a few things happening.” A declined payment is one that did not complete. A pending payment has been submitted and is still being processed.

| Status or message | What it usually means | Safe to send again? |
|---|---|---|
| “Payment declined” or “can’t be completed right now” | The payment did not complete. The bank, card issuer, or Venmo’s automated security system stopped it. | Only after you address the cause |
| “Pending” | The payment exists but is not final. It may be waiting on the bank or on the recipient. | No. Wait for the status to change |
| “Payment failed” or a “Bad state” error during payment | The attempt ended with an error. It may be a Venmo technical issue, and the payment may or may not have gone through. | Only after you confirm in the transaction feed that nothing was sent |
Why Venmo declines a payment
Venmo identifies two broad origins for a decline. The first is the bank or card issuer, which may refuse a transaction for reasons such as insufficient funds, a fraud-prevention block, or a restriction on electronic (ACH) transfers. The second is Venmo’s automated security system, which can flag a payment independently of your bank. Venmo does not always show which of these produced a particular decline, and no single fix guarantees approval.

The 8 fixes, in the order to try them
1. Read the exact error and follow its instructions
Venmo’s error guidance says that error-specific instructions take priority over general advice. If the message names a specific problem, follow the instruction it gives. If the message is generic, move to the app and device checks in step 6.

2. Check the transaction feed before retrying
Open the transaction feed and tap the payment to see its status and destination. If the payment appears there, the attempt may have gone through, and sending it again could duplicate it. Venmo’s Payments & Requests FAQ states: “You can’t change your payment method after a payment has been sent.” If the first payment did not go through, a new payment is a separate transaction, and it uses whichever funding source you select at that point.
3. Check the funding source and available funds
Confirm which bank account, card, or Venmo balance the payment used. A card can be declined for insufficient availability, either by the issuer or by Venmo for a fraud-prevention reason. Bank-funded payments can fail because of insufficient funds or because the bank restricts ACH transactions. Venmo cannot see the issuer’s specific reason for its own decline, so contact the bank or card issuer for it.

4. Try another funding method, if it makes sense
If you still need to send money, you can try a different linked bank account or card, or your Venmo balance if it covers the amount. Venmo suggests this option, but it does not bypass security review. An automated security flag can decline a payment from any funding source, so a second source may also be declined.
5. Repair a bank connection or verification problem
If Venmo reports that it lost its connection to your bank, remove the linked bank account and add it again. For an invalid account error, check the routing and account numbers against your bank’s records and ask the bank whether the account supports electronic (ACH) transactions. Verification takes time, so allow for the following windows:

| Verification method | Timing stated by Venmo |
|---|---|
| Manual bank verification | At least one full business day |
| Microtransfers | Typically one to three business days |
6. Run the app and device checks
For a generic error, work through these checks in order, then retry the payment:
- Confirm the device has working internet access.
- Free up storage and memory on the device.
- Turn off any VPN.
- Sign out of Venmo, then sign back in.
- Reinstall the Venmo app.
- Update the device’s operating system.
7. Confirm whether the payment is pending rather than failed
Some bank-funded payments stay pending for three to five business days. A payment sent to a phone number or email address that is not verified or linked to a Venmo account can remain pending until the recipient takes action. Eligible unclaimed payments can be taken back, but whether this is possible depends on the payment’s status and circumstances. The three-to-five-day window is general guidance, not a commitment for your particular payment, and Venmo does not offer a faster path for a payment that is already pending.

8. Use the right recovery or escalation path
If your account is frozen after a failed payment, follow the “Restore your account” option in the app, or go to venmo.com/recover. Venmo says recovery funded by a bank account may take up to five business days, while recovery funded by a debit card may be faster. For a bank-funded failure, the bank provides the specific reason for the decline (see step 3). If app or account problems persist after the checks above, contact Venmo Support.
