You can add physical cash to your Venmo balance at a staffed Walmart register using your physical Venmo Debit Card. Venmo lists a $3.74 fee per deposit, and the service is unavailable in Vermont. The money goes into your Venmo account balance, which is linked to the card—not into a separate card-only balance.

How to add cash to Venmo at Walmart

  1. Go to a staffed register at a Walmart store. Venmo says in-store cash loading is currently unavailable in Vermont.
  2. Present your physical Venmo Mastercard Debit Card and ask the clerk to add money to your Venmo Debit Card. The card must be swiped; this is not a cash deposit you can make by providing only your Venmo username.
  3. Choose an amount within Venmo’s limits. The service fee is $3.74 per deposit. For a deposit over $300, bring ID whose name matches the name on the card.
  4. After the transaction, check the Venmo app’s transaction feed for “POSDEP*CASH” and the store location.

Venmo’s Add Cash in Stores instructions provide the current retailer, fee, requirements, and limits; the help page does not show a publication date.

Cash deposit fees and limits

Venmo’s published limits for in-store cash deposits are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Limit period Maximum transactions Maximum total
Per transaction Not stated $20–$500
Rolling 24 hours 3 $999.99
Rolling 7 days 7 $3,000
Calendar month 20 $4,000

These are the limits Venmo lists for its in-store cash-loading service; they are not an assurance that a particular transaction will be approved. The $3.74 fee applies to each in-store deposit. Venmo does not describe this cash-loading option as free.

Other ways to add money to your Venmo balance

If you do not have cash to load at a Walmart register, Venmo documents app-based funding and Direct Deposit. Availability and timing differ by method.

Method Where to start Typical timing or condition
Linked debit card Venmo app: Me > Add Money > From a bank or debit card Typically instant, according to Venmo. A transfer cannot be canceled after it is initiated.
Linked bank account Venmo app: Me > Add Money > From a bank or debit card Typically 3–5 business days to reach the balance. Funds are unavailable until the transfer completes.
Direct Deposit Me > Settings > Direct Deposit Requires identity verification and feature availability. Timing depends on the issuer; setup can take up to two pay cycles to take effect.

Use a linked debit card or bank account

In the app, open Me > Add Money > From a bank or debit card, enter the amount, select the payment method, and tap Add. Venmo says debit-card transfers are typically available instantly. Bank-funded transfers typically take 3–5 business days, and the balance cannot be used until the transfer finishes. Bank verification, transfer limits, weekends, holidays, or a review may affect processing. See Venmo’s Adding Money to Your Venmo Balance guidance for the app process and timing.

What the Venmo card is connected to

The Venmo Debit Card is linked to your Venmo account; cash loaded through the Walmart service is added to the account balance. It is not a separate cash purse stored on the physical card. Venmo says the Mastercard Debit Card is available to most users and directs people to apply from the Cards tab in the app. The card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A., pursuant to a Mastercard license. See Venmo’s Venmo Debit Card FAQ.
