Veeco Instruments eliminated 26% of its jobs in the fourth quarter of 2008, the company said in a February 2009 report. The layoffs came as revenue weakened and Veeco recorded a $72 million quarterly GAAP net loss, including a $73 million goodwill impairment. The company also cut senior-management pay, reduced board compensation, froze employee wages and began consolidating operations.
What happened when Veeco cut 26% of its jobs?
Veeco eliminated 26% of its total jobs during Q4 2008. EE Times reported the cuts on February 9, 2009, and said most of the layoffs had already taken place. The figure describes jobs eliminated in that quarter; it is not a current workforce statistic.
The workforce action formed part of a broader restructuring. Veeco planned to centralize supply-chain and operations functions, consolidate business units, increase outsourced manufacturing and reduce its manufacturing sites from eight to four. It also cut senior-management pay, lowered board compensation and froze employee wages.
Why did Veeco’s Q4 loss widen?
Veeco reported $110.3 million in revenue and a $72 million GAAP net loss, or $2.29 per share, for Q4 2008. Its loss was nearly eight times the $9.4 million loss reported for Q4 2007. Veeco’s 2009 results included $80.1 million in charges, of which $73 million was goodwill impairment.

The impairment was the largest part of those charges. The reported figures establish its size, but do not specify what caused the goodwill impairment; they should not be read as evidence of a particular business, acquisition or asset being responsible.
For full-year 2008, Veeco reported a net loss of $71.1 million on $442.8 million in revenue. In 2007, it had reported a $17.4 million loss on $402.5 million in revenue.
What market conditions drove the restructuring?
Veeco’s markets moved in different directions during Q4. CEO John Peeler said bookings were $89 million, flat with Q3, even as data-storage bookings fell 57% sequentially to a historically low $14 million amid customers’ capital-spending freeze. He also said LED and solar orders rose 69% sequentially to $44 million.
The contrast helps explain why the quarter’s weakness cannot be described as uniform across Veeco’s markets: data storage deteriorated sharply, while LED and solar orders strengthened. The company’s announced operating changes—consolidation, outsourcing and fewer manufacturing sites—were structural cost actions alongside the workforce cuts.
How many employees did Veeco lay off in 2008?
The reported figure is 26% of Veeco’s total jobs eliminated in Q4 2008. The February 2009 report does not give a headcount for the jobs cut, so a reliable number of individual employees cannot be calculated from the percentage alone.
What did Veeco expect next?
At the time of the February 2009 report, Veeco forecast Q1 revenue of $60 million to $70 million and a GAAP loss per share of 56 to 72 cents. Those were forward-looking estimates made in 2009, not current guidance.

The 2008 layoff figure is historical. Veeco’s 2025 Form 10-K reported 1,265 employees across 13 countries as of December 31, 2025. Its Q4 2025 release reported revenue of $165.0 million and GAAP net income of $1.1 million. These later figures provide current context but do not change what the 26% figure meant in 2008.
